Freeview intermittent interference

There are several different types of interference that cause problems. This page deals with the situation where:
- Freeview reception is perfect or near-perfect most of the time
- The audio on TV and radio channels mutes momentarily a few times each minute
- The picture on a Freeview channel freezes a few times each minute
There are two main causes of this type of intermittent interference:
- 'Induction' interference
- Mobile phone interference
Induction interference
Induction interference is caused by mains-powered household devices that contain a large motor, such as:- Washing machine;
- Tumble dryer;
- Central heating pump or combination boiler;
- Fridge;
- Freezer;
- Power tools (drills, jigsaws etc)
- Vacuum cleaners;
- Water pumps;
- Automatic doors
You can identify if one or more of these devices is causing the Freeview reception problem by powering off the devices.
If one of these devices is causing the problem, then the reception problem can usually be solved by using a mains filter device and use it on the Freeview boxes mains connection.

Such as device is this: Maplin: 6-Way Flat Screen and HDTV Surge Protector and Mains Filter.
Mobile phone interference
If you keep a mobile phone by your Freeview box or digital television, keep it further away! This also applies to other transmitters such as baby monitors, video senders, walkie talkies, and portable phones.

For the last couple of weeks we have been having regular (every minute or so) breakups
from sutton com7 channels. All others seem ok.
Com7 however is showing about 30% signal recieved compared to all others.
Is sutton having problems? We have 2 set top boxes all with the same issue - but
both are fed from the same rooftop aerial through a distribution amp. This setup has been
working fine for about 2 years.
Or could there be something wrong my end - I have tried swapping cables (except the main run
to the roof) I did try removing 1 box from the amplifier as someone said a fault on that
could cause interference but no luck (and I expect it would be more than just com7 ?)
Any info welcome. thanks

As you haven't given a full postcode, we don't know if you are referring to reception from Crystal Palace in the Sutton area of London (the Sutton Relay transmitter doesn't have COM7), or whether you mean the Sutton Coldfield transmitter.
Whichever, none of those transmitters are currently listed for Planned Engineering or have any Faults listed that I can find.
Have you changed anything around in your installation when this started?
Make sure you don't have any HDMI leads near unscreened/poorly screened flyleads/aerial leads (ie. not double screened) as HDMI has been known to cause interference, especially to UHF C55 - COM7.
I take it you've checked your aerial and downlead looks intact/undamaged and the aerial still points in the correct direction.
You say it's 30% signal, what is it on the other multiplexes, and what are the Quality (or Error) figures like?
link to this comment |

Hi chris - thanks for the post
Sorry yes its sutton coldfield we are in birmingham
Yes I did a visual check on the aerial and cable - it seems the same as always.
We havn't changed anything - it just started happening - I ignored it for over a week
assuming maintenance or something but the listings links from here say not and no
faults reported elsewhere by others I can find either.
The values on all othe channels are around 76-81% power at 100% quality fairly stable
Except now Ch48 on 69000Khz is bouncing around between 28% and55% with 100%quality
(That is normally about 55% solid so something has changed there too in the last day)
Ch26 (now unused I think) on 5140000Khz is at 20%power 100% quality fairly stable
The channels on com7 (Ch55 7460000Khz) eg. have now increased power slightly and are bouncing
around between 38 and about 62 with constant 100% quality but breakups still prevalent.
I'll check the HDMI cable issue - thanks for that tip.
I'll check power lead routing is away from the input too.

If you haven't changed anything and checked all your coax plugs, connections, flyleads and swapped leads etc., have you introduced any new electrical equipment of any type, including lighting?
Do the problems occur at any particular time of day?
I assume that's the Local multiplex you are getting on C48. As for C26, that's not transmitted from Sutton Coldfield, but three other nearby transmitters use it for the BBCA multiplex (as a SFN) - Bromsgrove, Lark Hill & The Wrekin. Without a full postcode, I can't say if you might normally receive any of those, but the current high pressure is causing some periodic and variable tropospheric ducting which is bringing in signals from more distant transmitters. This might cause some interfering signals to affect C48.
But as your initial problem was COM7, as it's a SFN, problems/engineering at other nearby main transmitters with COM7 might have an effect on your reception. Which direction your aerial is pointing might give a clue. Having had a bit of a dig around I've also spotted that Sutton Coldfield was on Planned Engineering for the whole of May!
There were some intervals of tropo over some days in recent weeks as well, just to complicate matters, but that doesn't mean it affected your reception, that's so difficult to predict as it can affect different parts of the country by varying degrees and signals can change by the second or remain stable for much longer periods.

Hi chris
Many thanks for the very detailed response again.
Com7 power seems to have increased (I can't quantify at the moment as I have scheduled recording running)
but think its up maybe 20% of it's previous. Breakups not seen today but previously was not
time sensitive.
Oddly enough I've been recording smallville on paramount (ch32 - Ch42 642000Khz) at around
3 am. for the last week and that has been breaking up too although that chanel seems fine during
the day
Its very weird. I'll have to just keep my eyes open and see how it goes I guess.
Thanks again - if anything majour happens or I spot anything generally useful I'll put up a post.

The only thing I can add to my comment about COM7 SFN and Planned Engineering at other near main transmitters is that Ridge Hill had Planned Engineering last week with "Possible weak signal" and now Oxford and Waltham are similarly listed this week. Theoretically I guess it could have some impact on your COM7 signal.

Hello,
Intermittent interference, pixellated picture, freezing, audio interruption,
occasionally loss of signal message on Emley Moor transmitter here on South edge of York.
Usually during summer days, most noticeable over last week, sometimes
with signal strength indicated as high. Bad during rain.
Noticeable in past years during local Harvest time.
Even worse when my PVR is switched on and the TV antenna is routed via it.
I do not have any other electrical equipment near the TV inclusive of Mobile/Radio.
Have manually retuned, replaced TV antenna and cable.
Have switched off PVR and connected TV antenna direct to TV, still experiencing problems.
There are trees between myself and Emley Moor so have also tried alternative transmitters to the
North, West and South East but I still get interference especially Freeview ch 14, 25, 4, 15
sometimes 1 and 2.
Other people in my village experience TV reception problems and a look at all the TV antennae
show them all pointing at different masts.
I am now considering a FreeSat solution but asking you here if you have any other suggestions.
Could someone be using an illegal radio or have a TV signal booster or is it
4G interference (no mast nearby) or EMI from next door and how can I check or is it just simpler
to go to FreeSat ?
Thanks,

Kevin Dixon:
There has been engineering work at Emley (and also a number of local relay transmitters). The work at Emley (as I undertstand it) has been to get the main mast fully in service.
There's been some periodic adverse weather conditions affecting reception for some, which may not have helped. If your reception doesn't settle down then Freesat may be your best option.
How far away roughly are the trees?
Amateur or other such radio transmissions are unlikely to be affecting you (similarly 4/5G) unless there are antennae or masts close to you which I'm sure you'd notice.
We'd need a full postcode to look at predicted reception in your locale, which sounds like an awkward area if your neighbours have similar problems.

ROGER CULLINGHAM:
Recent (and some current) weather conditions can cause TV signals from distant transmitters to travel further and so cause interference when the wanted signal from a local transmitter is already marginal, which could be part of what is happening with you.
The fundamental problem with you is that the aerial is not pointing at (or even nearly at) the transmitter and even in a valley that will cause you to have a weaker signal than could be available!!
Your location is only 5km from Caradon Hill and whilst reception predictors aren't always 100% accurate, Freeview's does not predict reception from any other transmitter and suggests very good reception from Caradon Hill.
Your aerial should be pointing at a bearing of 234 degrees for your locale (approx. marginally S of WSW) and the rods (or squashed Xs) should be horizontal.
I suggest you look into repositioning your aerial!

Freeview nor the BBC are reporting any problems with the Cowling transmitter and it's not currently listed for Planned Engineering. How long have you been having problems with the HD channels? (I assume you mean 101-105 ?).
Check that your aerial hasn't been disturbed and is still pointing at the Cowling transmitter with its rods (or squashed Xs) vertical.
Check in your TV's tuning section that you are correctly tuned to Cowling's UHF channels C42, C45 but especially C39 for the HD multiplex.
Check all your coax plugs and connections behind your TV. Make sure you don't have any HDMI leads running close to your aerial lead or any flyleads especially if the latter aren't quality double screened types. HDMI has been known to cause interference.
With the radio problem is this FM or DAB and which stations?
There aren't any reported problems with BBC DAB stations, but if it's FM BBC Radios 1-4, this comes from the Holme Moss transmitter and has been having major ongoing engineering since the end of June with periodic reduced power.

I think atmospherics are highly improbable right now. Two of the respected sources of predictions for "temperature inversion/tropospheric ducting" show absolutely nothing over the UK at present. Also, still no faults or engineering being reported.
People chuck stuff up in their lofts which is why I suggested checking. Other than that, have you checked all your connections and cables as suggested? if you have any flyleads try swapping them, they can be a frequent problem. I assume your downlead from the aerial doesn't go outside, if so you need to check it for damage, water ingress etc.
Be aware, problematic connections, water ingress etc. can seem to affect reception of just an individual multiplex not always all of them.
You haven't mentioned it, so I assume you don't have any distribution amp/splitter?
See what signal strengths and quality you are getting for the multiplexes (groups of channels) shown in your TV's tuning section, they should all be pretty much the same.
Other things (other than interference) that could affect reception of a multiplex are new buildings nearby, scaffolding, trees growing bigger, indeed anything close by that could be on the line-of-sight to the transmitter especially if it's metallic.
Other things (including interference) - have you changed anything in your set up since this problem started?
Have you got any new electrical/electronic equipment? Set up any sets of xmas lights that have power units?
Does the problem occur when you switch any lighting or other equipment on, or even when a boiler runs?
If you post back with all that information, if it's not cables and connections we might be able to narrow down the potential problem.

We have booked a visit from the engineer that installed the aerial to check out the problem
The wiring for the tv is all internal fitted 5 years ago by the builder of our new home.
Nothing regarding electrics etc have changed
We have tried a new aerial cable
Thank you for your assistance

I hope that the person who installed the aerial is a different person from the one that installed the wiring. I'm afraid there are too many situations where "builders" do not understand how to correctly install such wiring, telephone/broadband wiring is another example - in most cases where the wrong type or grade of cable has been used and the way it's all been connected up.

Forgot to add "Nothing regarding electrics etc have changed" may be the case, BUT things can go faulty, so there should not be the assumption that it doesn't need checking.

Why does my Panasonic TV switch itself off and then on again a few seconds later?
I have a Panasonic TX-L32D25B. It's about 11 years old and basically still works fine. The current software is showing as 2.408. It is not connected to the Internet and never has been. We only use Freeview.
The aerial system is over 30 years old but we do not have any other problems.
We are at Rotherham (Post Code S60 5NP). As far as I know we receive signal from Emley Moor with a horizontal aerial but people nearby receive from Sheffield with a vertical mount so we could be in a dual transmitter zone. (I was once told by an aerial installer that the people down the road have to receive from Sheffield because the hill I live on is in the way of Emley Moor.)
This problem has occurred several times over the last few years. Our local TV repair shop once told me that it was something to do with an off-air component (maybe from the BBC) affecting the software on certain Panasonic models. He advised to disable the off-air update feature through the Setup Menu options. He also said to switch the set off at the mains and after few seconds Press and Hold the Red Power Button on the Handset : switch the set on at the mains while holding the Red Power Button until the picture appeared. I did all this and after a few attempts everything worked ok........until next time which could be months later.
This has happened again recently............
The TV set had been on from about 19:30.
From 20:00 to 21:30 we had been watching a pre-recorded program from our Panasonic DVD recorder (DMR-BW780) connected via an AV/HDMI input.
After 21:30 we found a program on MORE4 (Channel-18) and watched the last half of it via the TV tuner until it finished at 22:00.
We found the same program on MORE4+1 (Channel 86) starting at 22:00 so we set about watching the first half.
After about 10 minutes the TV switched itself off then on again after a few seconds.
This happened a few times so I did the bit with Red Power Button etc but the set still kept failing so we gave up and switched to ITV1 News-at-Ten on Channel-3. But the TV still kept going on and off.
So I switched to the DVD Recorder on the AV/HDMI input : set the DVD to ITV1 on Channel-3 and watched the rest of the news without any problem.
Then watched another program (or recording) via the DVD recorder for another hour without any problem.
The next morning it switched off and on once while tuned to BBC1 on Channel-1.
Dare I say it's been ok since then??!!
Online comments suggest it is some kind of overheating problem in the TV but I'm not convinced about that. As I see it the original suggestion by my local TV shop about some off-air component affecting the TV software (but not the DVD recorder) does make some sense especially when tuned to a non-mainstream channel. Something similar to this has happened in the past with an obscure channel but I can't remember which one.
It may or may not be a relevant aside we used to have a problem with the DVD recorder. If it was tuned to CHANNEL4 (Channel-4) or any of its associates CHANNEL4+1 : MORE4 : 47 : etc but not CHANNEL4_HD - it used to lock up and get stuck on that channel. Eventually I found a work-around to get off it. It seemed to happen after about 21:00 as if CHANNEL4 was transmitting some sort of parental control feature. I haven't noticed it recently so might have been sorted but it did seem to be caused by some off-air signal rather than a problem with the DVD recorder. It didn't affect the TV and it would all work correctly the next day until about 21:00.
Apologies for the lengthy description. I've read some your Q&A and have tried to answer some questions before you need to ask.
My question is...... Are there any off-air signals that could cause this problem? Any ideas to help could be useful. The TV set is proving to be unreliable. Maybe we need to replace it but that could create as many problems as it solves.
Many Thanks

Paul Taylor:
I'm not familiar with your set, but a few things occurred to me as I was reading.
My first reaction was to do with the DVD Recorder. I've certainly come across stories where the signal to the set disappears at various times depending on what recordings have been set - this is on the assumption your aerial is fed through the recorder and then on to the TV.
So my first question is - are you sure the set is actually switching off? Or is the screen just going black and no sound for those few seconds?
My next thought was that if it was anything to do with anything in the transmitted signal, the this would undoubtedly be as a result of a bug in the set's firmware. You mentioned the set has never been connected to the internet so I guess it's never had any firmware update, so if there was a bug, it could be fixed in a later update.
You said your aerial installation was around 30 years old, but wasn't giving you any problems. Are you absolutely sure of that? Where is the aerial? If it's external then water ingress could be an issue. Is the downlead secure or can it flap about a bit in the wind? Degradation of an aerial installation can reduce the signal somewhat and if it's become marginal then anything that affects the received signal could mean it disappears briefly. Having said that, and considering the periodicity of your issue it may only happen under certain weather conditions.
Have a look through your TV's tuning sections and see if you can find the Signal Strength and Quality figures (or Error/BER) for each UHF channel multiplex and post the figures for each. This may help eliminate or identify any signal issues.
I'd be inclined to connect the set to the internet and look for a firmware update - there is one. If you can't do it that way, you can download it from here -
Download Information of TV 2010-year Models for UK | Download | TV | Digital AV | Support | Panasonic Global
The page also has information on how to do it using that method.
One other idea, make sure your HDMI leads are not close to any aerial or flyleads especially if the aerial and flyleads are not high quality double screened types as HDMI has been known to cause interference.

Hello,
Our post code is CT1 2AR our aerial appears directed towards the Dover transmitter.
In the past few weeks we have been getting intermittant break-up and stop/start reception on some TV channels, e.g.
4 Seven is particularly bad and BBC2 is nearly as bad. Our TV shows signal strength and quality that for most channels is around 80% but for 4 Seven it at best is 25% and fluctuates to very low values.
We have also been getting problems receiving Classic FM on our digital radios which have there own built in aerials.
We had good reception prior to these latest problems. Are you aware of any issues relating to the transmitters or known obstructions that may be causing this?
regards
David

Hi. Up until very recently there has been quite a lot of weather related Tropospheric Ducting which has been very intermittent and variable. It doesn't normally affect all multiplexes (and so the TV channels carried on them), usually just one or two, but it does depend on where the interfering signals are coming from. This can affect TV, DAB and FM. The S/SE can often be quite vulnerable due to proximity to France etc.
If you have been having problems with BBC2, you should have had similar problems with other BBC channels as they are all carried on the same multiplex BBCA/PSB1 (except the HD ones which are on BBCB HD/PSB3).
Similarly with 4Seven on the ArtqA/COM5 multiplex you should have seen problems with eg. Dave, Pick, Quest Red etc.
See Channel listings for Industry Professionals | Freeview for which TV channels are carried on which multiplex.
You are predicted to get good reception from the Dover transmitter, but also from the Chartham Relay. I assume you've looked at your aerial to make sure it looks intact and is still pointing correctly and the downlead is secure and not flapping in the wind.
If it's pointing at Dover it should be pointing at compass bearing ~145 degrees (10 degrees S of SE), with its rods (or squashed Xs) horizontal.
If it's pointing at Chartham, the rods will be vertical pointing at compass bearing ~247 degrees (almost WSW).
If you tried retuning when you had badly pixellated pictures or intermittent/no signal - which is never recommended if you were correctly tuned - that will often just clear your correct tuning or leave you tuned to the wrong transmitter with a weak signal which can disappear.
If you are pointing at Dover, check you are correctly tuned to Dover's UHF channels as follows -
In the multiplex order BBCA/PSB1, D3&4/PSB2, BBCB HD/PSB3, SDN/COM4, ArqA/COM5, ArqB/COM6
The UHF channels you should be tuned to are C33, C35, C36, C39, C42, & C48
If you are incorrectly tuned then do a full automatic retune or a manual one on those UHF channels.
Did your aerial get replaced at some point shortly before or since Oct.2019, how old is it?
Dover is one of several transmitters whose original UHF channels were in aerial group C/D. With the 700MHz Clearance programme these were all moved to lower UHF channels now requiring a Group K aerial (although Wideband/Group T would do in good signal areas). Freeview did provide free help with aerials during the clearance programme.
Lastly, have you had a postcard at all from restoretv.uk ? If so, there's a possibility you may get interference from newer/upgraded mobile phone masts and would need a free filter.

Thank you so much for a very detailed answer Chris.
I shall investigate the points you raised and hopefully discover the problem.
In answer to some of the points raised I can say:
We do get issues with the co-channels you mention but not as severe.
The aerial is pointed at Dover.
The aerial is secure as is the cable. The connection/amplifier boxes are in good condition and taped against water ingress.
The aerial has not been replaced; it was here when we bought the property in 2013.
As stated earlier there was no issue with reception up to a few weeks ago so I assume the aerial is of the correct type.
We have not had a postcard from restoretv.uk.
I shall investigate the other points you kindly highlighted, particularly with respect to tuning.
Again many thanks for the expert guidance.
David

No problem, post back with more information about this amplifier when you've checked out the other things when you have time.
Does the aerial have plain rods or squashed Xs? Does it have a coloured green bung in either end or is it black? Does it have a flat metal grid on the back or is it a more elaborate arrangement with several rods, maybe even a log-periodic? Some typical examples -

Have Sutton Coldfield transmissions on Com5 channels reduced since the regional HD changeover on BBC news etc? I continually get Com5 channel drop out, to the extent that the Sony Android set keeps retuning and dropping Channels such as Sky News, Pick, Food Channel off the EPG, and retune does not bring them back. Redditch is on the fringe for signal reception, but since installing a new amplified aerial system 4 years ago the reception has always been good until now. Retune will not bring channels back.

Brian Gooden:
There've been no transmission power changes at Sutton Coldfield (or elsewhere) all the multiplexes transmit at 200kW. The only "transmission" change was the closure of the Temporary COM7 HD multiplex in June 2022, The BBC's HD channels except BBC News are now on PSB3/BBCB HD.
There have been TV channel changes/swaps of the COM multiplexes by some of the commercial operators.
See Channel listings for Industry Professionals | Freeview for what should be an up-to-date list of which TV channels are carried on which multiplex.
You won't get a Local multiplex in Redditch.
Sutton Coldfield had been on Planned Engineering in the latter part of March so if your set auto-retuned when COM5/ArqA was down it may have tuned into the weaker Bromsgrove signal which could be on a side-lobe (or even within the beamwidth) of your aerial,
I suggest you turn OFF any auto (re-)tune function if possible, it is generally more trouble that it is worth often clearing correct tuning or tuning to incorrect signals during transmitter maintenance or even weather related signal disruption.
Check in your TV's tuning section that you are correctly tuned to Sutton Coldfield's UHF channels -
The multiplexes are C43, C46, C40+, C42, C45, C39+ that's in the order BBCA/PSB1, D3&4/PSB2, BBCB HD/PSB3, SDN/COM4, ArqA/COM5, ArqB/COM6
(ignore the + sets cope with that automatically).
As you haven't given a full postcode I can't give accurate comment about your likely predicted reception, but quite a few locations in the W/NW of Redditch & some other parts can get reliable signals from Sutton Coldfield. Check in your TV Tuning Section for where it may show UHF channel Signal Strength and Quality and post the figures for each one. This may give a clue to anything unusual that might be occurring.

Apart from the Planned Engineering, at the Mendip transmitter, it could well be current weather conditions affecting you, they have been causing Tropospheric Ducting affecting much of the south coast and southern parts of the country on Saturday and now extending into the Midlands and North of the country through Sunday including East Anglia. This causes interfering signals from distant transmitters in Europe or the UK to affect reception of your wanted signals. This can periodically last, seconds, minutes and sometimes much longer - Do NOT Retune.
There is nothing you can do about this apart from wait for conditions to change, or use online streaming if available.
IF you did retune, you be best manually retuning the UHF channels for your transmitter.

Your question is rather puzzling! Which Digital channels are you referring to?
I take it you are referring to the transmitter to the ESE of Kendal, rather than the Kendal Fell transmitter to the West. In any event both transmit Freeview Digital TV signals (although it's only the 3 PSB multiplexes). Only the Kendal transmitter transmitter DAB radio signals.
However you should have no problem receiving that or several other main transmitters unless you are right in the bottom of a valley in which case we'd need a full postcode to try and check predicted reception. Also you need to be specific as to which digital signals or stations (TV or Radio) you are trying/wanting to receive.
