Digital Britain - local TV news question

If the £150m of the BBC licence fee is to be spent on regional news, would you prefer it to:

a) Support the current ITV regional news service so you can have two REGIONAL news programmes to watch at 6:30pm

b) Scrap ITV regional news, make the BBC regions smaller and provide both a 6:30pm programme and a 24-hour local news channel, with the following local areas (approx 2 million people in each):

  • 501-Bristol, Bath and Western Today
  • 502-Cambridge and Bedford Today
  • 503-Cumbria and Northwest Counties Today
  • 504-Devon and Cornwall Today
  • 505-Dorset and Wiltshire Today
  • 506-Durham and Northumberland Today
  • 507-East Midlands Counties Today (Notts/Derbys/Lincs/Northamptons/Leictersh/Rutland)
  • 508-Edinburgh and Glasgow Today (Perth, Dundee)
  • 509-Essex and Herts Today
  • 510-Highlands and Islands Today
  • 511-Kent, East Sussex and Brighton Today
  • 512-Leicester/Nottingham/Derby Today
  • 513-London* Today
  • 517-M4 Corridor Today(Oxford, Reading, Slow, Woking)
  • 518-Manchester Today
  • 519-Merseyside and Blackpool Today
  • 520-Norfolk and Suffolk Today
  • 521-North and Rural Wales Today
  • 522-Northern Ireland Today
  • 523-Rural Scotland Today
  • 524-South Wales Coast ("M5") Today (Cardiff, Swansea, Newport, Rhondda)
  • 525-Southampton and Hampshire Today

The general idea would be each Freeview transmitter would carry 1 to 4 local programmes, dependent on the area, with all services being on satellite and cable.
