What amazes me is that Ofcom did not insist that Local broadcasting should be in HD at least on satellite. HD has become the norm for millions of viewers and yet we are going to have to put up with an obsolete system for years to come.

Hi Trevorjharris, To tranmit a program in HD (mode 256-QAM 3/4) instead of the proposed local TV SD mode (mode QPSK 3/4) requires 14.3 dB extra transmitter power or a 27-fold power increase for the same coverage area. As lower transmitter power translates directly into lower investment in transmitters, feeders, antennas, power supply infrastructure, installation and lower running costs, this was done to make the start up of these companies viable in the first place. The transmission mode can upgraded later if revenues permit.
