Freeview reception - all about aerials

We have a Yagi type in HA4 post code, but suffer from sudden loss of (as last night @ 21.50h - ITV1, BBC fine still) and wonder if a high aerial is essential? An installer told us signal strength is good, but loss does occur. Our TV is the latest Sony.
