The on Eutelsat is that people living in regions where terrestial reception will notreason for Irish tv channels being transmitted be possible have stated that Sky is not an option as they do not wish to suscribe.Galway Mayo area where the Quietman and The Field were filmed is the region.Possibly veiwng cards will be provided by RTE/TVE. RTE caters for a population similar to the Greater Manchester area so resources are very limited and free to air costs would be prohibitive.

Sky pays the BBC,channel 4,more4 ande 4 to have their channels on EPG inRepublic of Ireland.Sky had to do this in order to compoete with UPC cable which relays these channels on their systems free under the tv without frontiers agreement.Upc also relays UTV which Sky is prevented from doing for internal competion reasons.Sky brochures in Ireland state that above channels are available without subscription. There are Irish versions of the Channel 4 group for advertising purposes.,only on Sky.

Freesat has become popular in Ireland as well.People are realising that you do not have to pay a subscription to Sky to receive a wide range of channels, public service, news, film channels, lots of radio stations as well.I have discovered from doing installions that the Sky type dish is more reliable.People who bought satellite systems in Lidl or Aldi solid grey dish. There has been problems in balancing alignment for vertical and horizantal polarity to recive full range of channels satisfactorily.

I remember the time ewhen this transmitter was under construction the dark ages prevailed in some Northern Ireland communities.Unionist politicians complained that this transmitter would be used to broadcast relublican propaganda into N. Ireland.Ian Paisley was among the first to avail of free Irish tv.No objection has been raised to the proposed direct DTT broadcasting of RTE and TG4 into N.Ireland under the GoodFriday agreement.Good to know that the dark ages are over and people of all backgrounds are looking forward to receiving Irish tv.

Thanks Briantist for info re PSBs being paid for retransmission of their channels. Regulation and licensing must be in favour of the suscriber in those markets.

About 10 years ago Sky had no PBS channels on their EPG in ROI.This put them at a competitive disadvantage vis a vis NTL cable(now rebranded UPC)who had all Irish and British PBS channels at the top of Epg.Irish channels first.NTL also distributed multichannel tv to rural areas by microwave.A decoder was neccessary for reception of their tv system.Sky felt obliged to compete and contacted Irish and British tv providers for permission to put their channels on Sky EPG.BBC and channel 4 group agreed provided an annual fee was paid.
