Thank you for your advice. I will put a note in my files of what was done but I hope that this will not occur too often. Mind you, I shall be better able to cope next time after your instruction.
Having heard of all the downsides about my manufacturer I also hope that you're not going to retire in the immediate future,

As I could not find a "factory settings" button I carried out the shortened version which you suggested, but found that at the end more programmes were missing from the guide but that it had received a total of 150 stations.
I lost heart but fortunately I managed to get a local TV man to call in today. He muttered dark things about Sony TVs and the non-user friendly aspects to them. He also tried your shortened version, without success saying that he knew the programmes were there but were not displayed. After that he tried a manual retuning of each frequency but this was also not effective. He then went on to the the route of "factory settings" (which seems to be called "Reset" on Sony)
at which point the TV gave up its battle and has retuned. It is back to "normal"
