John Dixon: I have been informed from both Sony and Freeview that the problem has been resolved. You may need to do a factory reset or alternatively if you haven't changed anything as a workaround it may now be OK with no further action on your part.

Chris and js, many thanks for the info.
This is at least the third time as I recall that this type of issue has afflicted this product range from Sony. Currently all is good.
