Freeview signals: too much of a good thing is bad for you

BN1 3AN, communal
roof
ariel but
no signal
at all. Currently relying on rubbish indoor ariel. Should I pay to get a new rooftop ariel myself (tall building so will need scaffolding...£££££'s) or is there another way> Don't want cable....
