thodkin - I think you perhaps do not know about "polarisation". The radio waves are usually sent wobbling up and down (Horizontal Polarisation), which is what the sideways pointing aerial elements collect.

Fill-in transmitters like Cefn Mawr are deliberately set up with Vertical polarisation, so the aerial needs to be mounted with the rods up/down.

So your main ae is not only pointing the wrong way; it is also the wrong orientation.

Even then it might pick up a very local strong signal, but as there is a competing signal on the same frequencies that will be stonger, even though far furter away.

I won a TV in a night club competition in Singapore, which I subsequently brought back to the UK. Sound separation needed adjusting, which Toshiba were willing to do either free or for very little, so long as I took the TV to the one place in the whole of the UK where they did it - on Acre Lane at the Clapham/Brixton border.

Every bit of 2 miles from my home in Herne Hill!

Even morre irrelevent, I helped set up Toshiba's first ever UK site ~1973

Report from the screenface - Digital retuning seems to have gone OK, but the analogue TV in the kitchen now only has a b/w pic. Presumably signal weaker?

BBC's switchover people got to sort that one out!

Hi Brian - Must admit to confusion now over muxes and strengths!

Are we now (7/4/11) getting 20k/2k/2k/2k/1k/1k? Unsurprisingly the 20k works with a bent nail and the rest don't?

What will we have from 20/4?

Is "Comparison of analogue and digital signal levels" now or later?

Mike - Thanks. That is clear. er. ish.

Bit like the soft mutation in Welsh. Or the Balkan Question.

A slightly simplistic question. Why does it make sense to broadcast some channels at 20kW and others at 2kW or 1kW?

Is it coz some is 64QAM and some only 16? Will my set-top ae find them equally receptionable?

I have tonight found that I get usable ITV if the loop Ae faces not quite the right direction!

Phil Williams - where in Wrexham? Down here in Chirk - 10mls south and over the crest of a hill - we are firmly in Central TV and BBC Midlands (wherever the midlands are).

But Wrexham proper surely uses mainly Manchester/Grenada TV? I certaily would if I could.

I have even heard that there are TV signals in Welsh, but we know them not.

A Smith - I presume you can't get any of the Mux PSB1/BBCA - as listed here Freeview on The Wrekin TV transmitter | ukfree.tv - independent free digital TV advice .
You are very close to the Wrekin - could be too much power! Are you using an amplifier? If so, remove or depower it. (LL145HD)

Hi Brian - I just tried to switch off alerts for "Sandy Hill" but seem to have stopped them all!

Is selection possible?

link to this comment

Rarely do myself.

I keep getting email alerts for new posts on "Sandy Hill" - presumably I posted there sometime. Do not want them, so tried to turn them off. Seem instead to have turned of ALL alerts.

Is there a way to select which I want and which not?
