Upgrading from Sky+HD to Freesat+HD | Freesat

Hayley: The post code is only used to ensure that the viewer receives news items etc appropriate to their area, but in your case you should just enter a post code taken at random from any of the advertisers seen in the Yellow pages that covers the Dover area, or anywhere else if it comes to it!

Emley Moor (Kirklees, England) transmitter
Wednesday 30 November 2011 5:14PM

Richard Caywood: It should be appreciated that when such as you have mentioned occurs its 99% of the time because the usually applying "non line-of-site reception" of the signal received is being obstructed or reflected in some way, like for example such as you can get from branches on trees with wet leaves blowing about in the wind, as there isn't anything on a transmitter mast that can vary with weather conditions.

The other point is, that even although the signals all come from the same mast they are at different height levels and so don't necessarily radiate in exactly the same horizontal plane, this making it whereby a signal from one level on the mast can be reflected by whatever, whereas from a different level it isn't, its total hit and miss!

The other factor that can affect signals being received is dense rain clouds, as these can have a reducing effect on the signal in roughly the same way as it does with Satellite equipment.

Freeview reception - all about aerials | Installing
Wednesday 30 November 2011 8:11PM

Kevin Allen: At only 12 miles away from the transmitter HD reception should be excellent, and although that box you are using has a somewhat chequered history of problems, having been withdrawn from sale at one point because of them, you really have to give some info regarding your aerial system, which if too elaborate is liable to cause severe signal overloading problems resulting in poor quality reception.

harry: I don't fully understand where the wii comes into it, but if you have upset the channel used to receive the signal from the Sky boxes RF outlet then make sure the TV being used to receive it is set on analogue, (not DVB) and then carry out a retune, this will recover the Sky boxes signal whatever you may have set the Sky boxes RF output channel to.

C21 (474.0MHz) after switchover
Thursday 1 December 2011 8:24AM

Jenny: The usual reason for this happening is because more channels are being picked up than the memory is capable of storing, hence when the set is switched off they get lost.

You have to carry out a factory re-set first (sometimes called default setting) then cary out a normal auto tune.

Andrew: As you are only 16 miles away from Emley Moor its very possible that the signal you are receiving from the BBC multiplex on your outdoor aerial is slightly too powerful and is blocking your receiving equipments tuner, the indoor aerial giving less signal to the tuner hence its not blocking it, likewise enabling you to tune in the BBC on Mux Ch47 (682.0 Mhz)

The only way around the problem is to purchase an attenuator to place in line with your TV or box, something between about 6dB or so should suffice, although variable types are better as they can be fine tuned.

It should be appreciated that although the transmitter power levels are all the same its not necessarily the case that they will be received at exactly the same strength, as they radiate from different levels on the mast.

Charlotte: There is nothing in common between Satellite and Freeview reception, and so the Sky dish you refer to is purely for Satellite reception, and so if you connect the cables from the dish into your Sky+ box you will receive all channels that's not linked to a subscription.

However there is a qualification to that, insomuch that you will not get 5* / 5US etc and might not get ITV channels either, as to receive these you require a "free to view" card from Sky costing £25.00 and lasting for an indeterminable time, but this will not let you use the recorder side of your Sky+ box as it has to be subscribed to as a separate item.

The normal aerial cable you refer to is possibly not connected to anything, or its that the aerial is fitted with a mast head amp and you don't have the in-line power supply to feed it, but the point is that its in no way connected to the dish.

Digital switch-over problems | Switchovers
Thursday 1 December 2011 5:36PM

Ian W: Any equipment that loses channels when switched off is generally because an attempt is being made to store more channels than the memory chip can handle, hence when the equipment is unpowered they are lost.

You have to carry out a factory re-set (sometimes called default setting) on the device that's losing the channels followed by a normal auto-tune, as this usually cures the problem.

Ian W: Meant to add, it would also have been beneficial to have had knowledge of your post code for signal strength expected checking purposes.
