Donald Hindley: Provided that your signal strength / quality levels are at least 60% (equivalent of) or above, 75% or so being the norm, then the problem you refer to is simply caused by the fact that radio waves of a microwave nature cannot pass through water above a certain density and heavy thunder type clouds are exactly that, you would get the same effect if you soaked a towel in water and threw it over your dish so that it covered the LNB, the results being an instant "no signal" warning.

By the way, if your normal signal levels are less than 60% (especially quality) then your dish requires slight realigning.

Signal levels accessed by pressing "services" then 4 - 6 on a standard Sky box.

robert sprott: The posting I just sent (accidentally) to Donald Hindley @ 3.29PM was actually intended for you, DH having asked a similar question under a different main heading and which I had edited the reply to suit your particular query.

Maurice Hayward: Can you receive Yesterday (12) or ITV4 (24) on your Sony DVD recorder as these are on the same mux transmitter channel as EPG 47.

If though the EPG's mentioned are not working either then you should make sure that your Sony is not suffering from receiving an excessively high level of signal as you are located at under 2 miles away from the station, Sony tuners not being quite so capable of coping with this type of situation in the same way as Panasonic's can.

Pamela: Thanks for taking the time to give an update on your situation, and I am pleased to hear all is OK again.

Margarida Lima: If you are using a standard Sky box press "services" - 4 -6 and check what the signal strength / quality levels are showing as, if less then 60% (equivalent of) then the dish requires slight realigning, this usually in the horizontal plane, left to right.

If you have a Sky+ box then press "services" and you will then see the main menu with "options" highlighted, highlight the settings menu using the right arrow button and press select, then using the left/right arrow buttons scroll to "signal" and press select, this will then display the signal level indicator bars.

Further info dependant on results.

McAteer: Heavy thundery type rain will always cause problems with satellite reception as microwaves cannot pass through dense water clouds, however this is made worse if the dish hasn't been aligned properly so press "services" 4 - 6 and check that both strength / quality levels are NOT under the equivalent of 60%, as if any of the two are then the dish requires slight realigning.

john hunt: If I could just add to what has already been said, if your TV person was local then when he changed the items concerned over and "must" found that there was no immediate difference by doing so, then the usual procedure would be for the engineer(?) to accept payment on the understanding that should the same fault occur within 14 days or so that the original items would be refitted and a refund of the payment made minus maybe £5.00 or so for diesel or whatever.

My reason for saying this is, that I suspect that your problem is possibly being partially caused by atmospheric reasons albeit that you still "might" have a deficiency in your aerial system such as a slightly corroded connection where the coax joins into your aerials termination box, but as you specifically mentioned the BBC was involved and its generally always the best then I would think it prudent for you to enquire locally with a neighbour if they are experiencing similar problems, of course only neighbours whose aerials are observed to be mounted and pointing in exactly the same direction as yours or they wont be receiving the same BBC.

The only point I was curious about regarding the aforementioned items that were changed, are you referring to a mast head amplifier and separate power unit associated with?

Maurice Hayward: Could you please clarify on a point that I am a bit confused about.

You have stated - >> I Receive an excellent picture on my tv on all channels including channel 47..but cant record channel 47 << - then on the latter part of your posting - >> But why is it that only channel 47 wont appear on the tv guide on my panasonic tv and Sony recorder ?? <<

Are you simply referring to the fact of when you are viewing the Sony's output on your Panasonic TV?

However, if that is what you are meaning then it strongly suggests that your Sony's tuner is defective as far as it responding to that EPG channel, something not exactly unheard of although it could be any EPG channel involved, Philips DVD Freeview recorders of a few years old having suffered from the same problem, although in their case it was EPG 1(BBC) and caused by a tuner defect, the problem vanishing when the offending item was replaced.

Margarida Lima: If you do not see the signal levels being indicated on any of the boxes twin tuner inputs, which by the way are independent of each other, then that suggests that the dish has moved out of alignment more then the "slightly" as was previously mentioned, and so this will require to be checked out.

However there is a couple of tests that you can try, the first being to disconnect your box from the mains supply then reconnecting it again "after" waiting for about 30 seconds or so, then letting the box go through its usual set up procedure.

The second thing to test is that the LNB settings are still OK using the following procedure.

LNB checking - reset on a Sky+ HD box

1:- Press services on your Sky remote control and you will see the main menu with "Options" highlighted.
2:- Highlight the "Settings" menu using the right arrow button and press select.
3:- Press - " 0 - 1 - Select " to access the Installer setup menu (this menu is NOT listed on the Settings menu options).
4:- Press select to see the Setup menu displayed with Hi and Lo band frequencies highlighted.

The correct LNB Set Up values should read:

LNB Type: Standard
1:- Low Band LO Frequency: 9.75
2:- High Band LO Frequency:10.60
3:- LNB Power Supply: ON
4:- 22 KHz Command: ON

Press the red button to reset them to default values even although they may
already be indicating them.

Then finish by pressing select or Sky to return to normal.

If this does not bring any results then its either the dish alignment problem mentioned (most likely) or its the box that has developed a fault, this easily checked should you be on friendly terms with anyone local that also uses Sky and it doesn't require to be Sky+ HD either, as if its only a standard Sky box with a single input then that is enough to verify the box is OK, just use the single input on the boxes LNB(1) socket.

Blonski: That does not sound very promising, as its suggestive of the Amstrad boxes power supply having faltered, this NOT an uncommon thing to happen.

If you have not already done so, but disconnect the box from the mains and leave it sitting for about 5 minutes or so before reconnecting it again, and after its started to respond to the remote control "immediately" check if its receiving anything, although if it does then it may not last for long before going off again "if" its the power unit problem.
