Lisa Vanderstreaten: The Freeview picture vanishing when you insert the scart into the TV's AV1 is normal "if" the recorder is switched on whilst you do it, as you recover the Freeview picture by pressing the DTV or maybe "D" button on the TV's remote control.

Although its whilst it has cut out the TV's picture that you select AVI on the recorder "input select" button referred to, because should you be using a fully connected scart cable and your TV is able to output its video signal via its AV1 scart socket, then you should be able to see the Freeview picture via the recorder by having done that, i.e: as the signal would loop through it.

Havent as yet managed to check the manual though, as your TV might NOT have that
facility.

J Whyman: Although the term "factory reset" might suggest that it really refers to everything other than the hard drive, such as all the personal settings that have been made, programmes "set" for recording as well as wiping the tuners memory completely clean of everything stored in it.

As far as PVR's are concerned whether Freeview or Freesat, I cant think of any brand where a factory reset has any effect on the hard drive or indeed any other action a user can take that would wipe the hard drive, "except" (on some that allows it) by selecting "format hard drive" whereby anything recorded would then be lost whether its been viewed or not, and even at that a warning message would always appear on the screen informing the user that by pressing "yes" to the question "do you want to format the hard drive" will result in everything stored being lost.

J Whyman: Pleased to hear that the "default" setting procedure was successful, but as far as the picture freezing problems are concerned I did notice one or two others having recently made complaints of a similar nature, but though just purely for test purposes you should carry out a signal check on one of the programmes that suffers from this problem "whilst you are viewing it", this achieved by pressing: Menu - System - Signal detection (called condition on some Humax's) and check if the quality indicator is showing erratic readings, this indicating that your reception is on the iffy side for reasons other than the box.

By the way you can check all of Sutton Coldfield's six muxes by carrying out the same procedure "whilst viewing" the following undermentioned programmes, plus also ensuring that the mux "CH" number indicated on the signal strength screen (usually at the top) corresponds with the following "mux" channels (NOT epg. guide numbers) listed below, this confirming that all programmes are being received from the same station and not an odd one being picked up from elsewhere.

BBC1 (Ch43) / ITV1 (Ch46) / HD (if applicable Ch 40) / ITV3 (Ch42) / Pick TV (Ch45) - Film 4 (Ch39).

J Whyman: Film 4 is mux Ch39, the site having cut the number off because it was bracketed.

Tony Jaques: The fact of you having a Technosonic PVR101 (also known as Tevion 801 / or 1620) that was still operational is a bit of a record, as these boxes have a chequered history by being notorious for suffering from a large range of problems (including that of your present one) and basically caused by software bugs, manufacturers fixes in most cases having made the situation worse.

About the only thing you can do that "might" help the situation is to carry out a "first time installation" but NOT followed by an auto scan, but manually tune in each of the stations muxes one at a time storing results, then once completed go into the edit programmes list and delete all unwanted programmes including radio channels, this hopefully being a way to get over the problem.

If you wish you could try bypassing the manual tune after having carried out the "first time installation" and just use auto tune, but if this fails you will have to carry out the procedure mentioned.

Mux channel numbers used by Winter Hill. (excl HD)

50 - 59 - 58 - 49 - 55

Lin: As its a Sky+ box then try swapping the two input cables over, if this still results in a no signal warning then try disconnecting the box from the mains and waiting about 30 seconds or so before reconnecting it again then allowing it to go the usual searching for listings procedure, if the situation remains the same then excluding the possibility of the actual box being defective the problem might be caused by the dish having been knocked slightly out of alignment, this usually always being in the horizontal plane (< >) right to left, the only real way to check if this applies or not in the absence of a signal meter being to hand is by trying the box out on someone else's dish.

By the way, I don't feel that there is really any point in checking the two connectors on the dishes LNB as the chances of water having gained access to both connectors at the same time is quite remote, but though if swapping the leads over did result in the picture being restored then that indicates that the coax feed now connected into the LNB2 position is faulty, and so it would be worth unscrewing its "F" connector from the block then further unscrewing it from the coax for purposes of checking for water, drying out if necessary before smearing some Vaseline or similar inside the coax entrance to the plugs body before screwing it back onto the coax.

However if on inspection the connector seems to be OK then that particular LNB port could have developed a fault, best way to check being to swap the two leads over on the LNB, because if one is faulty then the picture will vanish again.

Derek Cooper: Are you referring to reception problems relating to a Sky system?

Lionel Higman: Steve P is looking from the angle that because this is a DC pass splitter then you "might" have a mast head or otherwise type of booster fitted between the splitter and the aerial, the booster being powered "via the coax" from a small power supply sited near to the TV, or alternatively powered by the TV itself "if" it has an active aerial power facility.

The reason for the splitter being DC pass is so that it will not block the power from the power supply reaching the mast head amp, and why that the coax from the power supply "has" to be connected into the DC pass out socket, the aerial going to in.

That said though, judging by what you have said is inclined to indicate that you do not have a mast head amp fitted and that the box you see is just a coax termination box, and so although that the splitter is a DC pass type its likely just being used a normal splitter.

By the way, with reference to my description regarding the appearance a log periodic aerial, can it be assumed that your aerial is not that type?

It would also assist if the model number of your TV was known for the purpose of checking its specifications.

Lin: If swapping the two inputs over did not restore the picture then either the box is faulty or your dish has been moved slightly out of alignment, otherwise tests given would have indicated the source of the problem, as error 29 (sometimes 25) only refers to what you are NOT witnessing, that being the signal strength relating to the default transponder that provides your boxes EPG, (electronic programme guide).

If possible you should try and check your box on someone else's dish, as even if it was faulty it cannot in any way damage a dish, just mentioned in case you were wondering!

Pam: Yes, this was because your TV had picked up more channels that its tuners memory capacity could store hence they dropped out again when the set was switched off, "first time installation" before tuning having cleaned out the tuners memory thereby allowing more storage capacity for the channels actually required.
