Chris : Many thanks for your update, and pleased to hear that you have managed to sort the problem out to your satisfaction.

Sam: You should not lose any ITV or E4 channels on a Sky box unless some fault has developed in the box, you should remove the mains connection and leave the box unpowered for about a minute or so before reconnecting it again, then after it starts responding to the remote control let it go through its usual "searching for listings" procedure and see if these channels have returned.

Regarding the coax lead / connector plug you refer to, if the Sky engineer replaced the "F" connector then thats inclined to indicate that the lead is not suitable for Freeview reception as its a feed from the dish and is only suitable for another Sky box or a Freesat receiver.

If you are thinking on Freeview then you will require a normal aerial to be installed, but though your Sky box can connect into a (nearly any!) new TV via a scart lead, as then the TV is just acting like a monitor and as such does not require an aerial.

Do I need to buy a booster? | Installing
Saturday 15 September 2012 9:08PM

Elaine: It might be that the signal you receive is at a level that is just high enough to resolve a picture and no more, but that the DR20 is not so sensitive whereby the signal drops out at the slightest variation in signal strength, as in cases like that a two way powered booster always helps.

However a more precise answer cannot be given as you have not indicated your location (post code or one from nearby) and which makes it impossible to assess the signal levels expected where you reside.

Chris: Do "not" be tempted to alter anything, as what you have said suggests that the problem could be caused by either atmospheric reasons or that there is a problem at the transmitter, as transmitter problems are not always reported for some hours after the event and on occasions can even be on the next day.

Should you be on speaking terms with a neighbour you could maybe make an enquiry with them, or possibly someone else local.

But once again, do not alter anything for the time being.

daniel: If you genuinely have a Freesat TV then the dish connects directly into the TV, as Sky and Freesat are 100% compatible with each other as far as the dish arrangements are concerned.

As far as the two cables are concerned, just use one of them as the two cables are only necessary if a twin tuner Freesat recorder or Sky+ box is being used, and by the way the two cables are electrically identical to each other so you can use either one.

daniel: And forgot to mention, that you do not require any other box unless you wish to be able to record Freesat programmes then you will require the twin tuner Freesat PVR, and as this requires the aforementioned twin inputs the LNB on the dish requires to be changed to a quad type if not already that, as sometimes Sky engineers will fit a quad block as standard so have a look up at the block and you might see two spare ports, if not you require a quad LNB kit to be fitted and these are obtainable for around £10.00 or so from a few e-bay outlets and are simplicity to fit, then all you require is to run another single coax from the LNB to the TV.

Chris : Although I am not suggesting that you alter anything for the time being as all you will do is to lose all the settings you have already made, but what I wondered was whether or not the aerial that you use is exclusively yours and is "not" shared by anyone else?

Problems caused by atmospheric conditions are quite commonplace in the South of England around this time of the year and are frequently the cause of disruption to reception, but its folly to try and alter anything as all that does is to compound the problem whereby when the signal returns to normal the settings on the TV arent!

Stuart Trayner: This query was fully answered / commented on in reply to your original posting under "Freeview on the Angus transmitter" made on "thursday 13th September @ 10:06PM, the answer basically being that because of a possible clash between Blackhill's commercial channels and Tay Bridges PSB ones this type of thing is only worth trying by an enthusiast as its doubtful if anything could be achieved.

No other options exist as far as I can see, as your area appears to be screened as far as picking up the relatively local Angus transmitter (@ 7 miles) is concerned.

stephen: Purely on the technical sense yes! although I would not advise attempting this until after about 3 weeks or so has lapsed after your brother has taken out a multiroom subscription, as what you are suggesting is a violation of your brothers contract with Sky and should this be found out may have repercussions in the financial sense for your brother.

Upgrading from Sky to Freesat | Freesat
Sunday 16 September 2012 1:26PM

JSW:

a) You will be able to view Sky's "Free to view" channels which are basically the same as offered on Freesat, although its a swings and roundabouts situation as Sky might have an odd channel not on Freesat and vice versa.

b) A card isnt really required for most channels except Sony TV (157), although you do require it to be kept inserted for purposes of having the correct local news for the area you reside in.

c) Correct! as the recording / playback side of the box will be disabled at the same time as your ability to view Sky package channels, and if you wish to have the same facilities then you require a Freesat twin tuner PVR, and although a number of brands are seen advertised if you want a quality device then you should think along the lines of a Humax Foxsat-HDR, these available with varying sizes of hard drive the link being for a 1TB version.
