Martin Warren: Just noticed that you had mentioned about the HD working in the living room, "if" you are referring to HD via a Sky+ HD box then it will have two coax feeds going into it and with these most likely being from a quad block, should this be the case then make a close inspection of the LNB as it might have two ports spare inside the shroud that covers the tops of the "F" connector plugs.

Martin Warren: Yes, you can also get "Octo" LNB's which as would suggest have 8 output ports

Martin Warren: Obviously Octo blocks are more expensive devices, but the undermentioned link is for a somewhat less costly version from a "reputable" supplier, although you could also have a search around yourself for any sources than may even be cheaper, the only snag there being that "nasty" might be also be associated with cheap!

Martin Warren: Just realised that you had already replied, anyway the point to beware of when you are fitting an alternative block is that you dont accidentally move the dish out of alignment by pulling on it in any way, as clamp bolts used on the dish might not be as tight as they could be.

Gerry: When you say hum, I assume that you are meaning from the actual box? because if you are then its likely from the ventilation fan on the rear of the box or even the hard drive, something which many people find somewhat annoying if the device is located in a quite room.

Of course the hum is sometimes made worse dependant on what the box is sitting on, as if positioned on a thin cabinet the noise can be somewhat amplified in the acoustic sense by the cabinet vibrating, so try a test by lifting the box off whatever its sitting on to see if the hum stops, if it does then you might need to put soft rubber pads under the boxes feet.

BG: You will have to purchase a two way switchable scart selector box and you connect its common output into your TV's single scart socket.

You then connect one of the selector boxes scart sockets into the Sky boxes AV1 (maybe marked TV) using a scart cable, and then the second scart socket on the selector box into the DVD / VCR's AVI scart socket using another scart cable.

Finally, using another scart cable connect the Sky boxes VCR (or AV2) socket into the DVD / VCR's AV2 input socket.

Operation - Either the Sky box or the DVD / VCR can be viewed on the TV by using the two way switch on the scart selector box, but if you wish to record from the Sky box set the DVD / VCR up by viewing it (the recorder) on the TV, and then select AV2 on the recorders "input select" menu to input the scart cable link from the Sky box, because as soon as this is enabled you will be viewing the Sky box via the DVD / VCR, you can then set the recording times on the DVD / VCR.

By the way it might also be possible to record from the TV via the DVD / VCR's AV1 if this is left selected on the two way selector box, but the success of this depends on whether or not the switcher box is fully wired (all pins connected) as most aren't, but if it is then the input selector menu on the recorder has to be sitting on AV1 input and not AV2 as is used to record from Sky.

Jade: If you are referring to the Rhondda transmitters being for PSB only purposes then the programmes you are missing are not in any way connected with the licence fee, as they are purely commercial enterprises that only operate on the basis of profit expected, this in the same way as a National supermarket chain will not open a store anywhere that is not expected to return a high enough level of profit.

brian manley: If I could just add to what has already been said, insomuch that its unfortunate that you have just moved into the area because if anyone receiving Greenwich on pre-changeover frequencies was doing so with a signal level of around 55% or above then there was no need for them to change aerials, as in practical terms the signal level difference with the change of frequency would under normal circumstances be quite insignificant.

This really applies to any similar types of situations, as its only in cases where a persons reception is inclined to be on the iffy side that strict adherence to aerial band groups really makes any difference, although I will admit that even in iffy cases the difference in levels seen is always more significant in situation where reception is at a lower frequency than the aerial is designed for, such as applies in your case and why I qualified what I mentioned by stating the 55% and above level.

Val: Your problem is suggestive of something being defective with your aerial system and this is why you are having trouble trying to tune the TV, and so if you are using a jumper cable from a wall socket into the TV then this should be checked out, but whatever system you are using it would have been of considerable assistance if you had indicated your location, this in the form of a post code or one from nearby such as a shop etc as this would then have enabled an assessment of the signal levels expected at your location and from the hitherto unknown station involved.

Steven Tye: Its assumed that you must be referring to a Sky HD box? as otherwise you would see the card in the lower slot in the middle of the front, if it is an HD box then the card should be located in a pull down flap on the lower right hand side of the fascia.

By the way water can still be trapped under the capacitors in the power supply, and so you should really take the casing off, sit the box on its end, and then blow mildly warm air from a hair dryer on its medium setting over the power unit area of the PCB for at least 5 minutes or so.
