Jonathan: With regards to the issue of the magic eye, please disregard that previously said as the use of an eye in the system does not come into the equation by the fact of the booster preceding the Sky box and not after it.

I put the error in that said down to being somewhat fatigued after a lengthy traffic congested drive home from where I had been working in North Norfolk.

The only other point I was going to make being, and that was to enquire if the extension from the Sky box to the bedroom was installed by yourself or was already in existence? and whether or not it passes through any junction boxes or meets up with any other cables along the way?

Jo: If the problem referred to applies to all HD channels then rather than going through the process of rebooting your box leave it sitting on the same channel and remove the viewing card for about 5 minutes or so to allow it (the card) to cool down before reinserting it again, if the HD channel returns then this can point to your card being defective.

That type of problem can also be caused by a defective box, the fact of the problem being there from the start somewhat suggesting that the box could well be defective.

You should also try checking the signal levels received using the undermentioned procedure.

1:- Press "Services" on your Sky remote control and you will see the main menu with "Options" highlighted.

2:- Highlight the Settings menu using the right arrow button and press select.

3:- Use the left / right arrows scroll to "Signal" and press select.

4:- The signal strength / quality will be indicated on the grey bars.

If the strength / quality is being indicated then both of "has" to be around 52% minimum for reliable reception, this should be tested prior to the HD channels failing then once again afterwards to note if anything has changed.

Jo: The signal on the second input should never be zero at any time, and so try swapping the two input feeds over and see what happens, because what you have reported can indicate either (1) the outlet port on the LNB that's connected into the Sky boxes LNB2 tuner is defective hence try swapping over the inputs, or (2) the boxes actual LNB2 tuner is faulty.

As far as your older Sky HD box is concerned, you could give it a try out using the BBC HD channel and see what comes up, but prior to this check that your subscription Sky viewing card is operating as a standard card on the old HD box by selecting (157) to check that you can view SonyTV, because if you can removing the card should result in the "please insert viewing card" message appearing.

Obviously the best test of all is to try your box out on someone else's twin input dish, but check out that said and give an update on the results.

Jo: Yes please do, but just to clarify on a point concerning your installation, is the Sky+HD box in question an update to an existing one?, or was it installed (by Sky?) as part of a completely new installation including the dish?

By the way, the swapping over of the input feeds test will reveal if the LNB port is faulty or not, because if it is then your normal "non HD" viewing will now be affected, although as things are my main suspicion is with the box.

janet: By saying that your signal is not great then it all depends on your interpretation of what it should be, because both the strength and quality have to be around 55% minimum for reliable reception but preferably with the quality being higher than the strength.

If your Sat dish is on the porch then you should leave the Sky box on the signal check screen and get someone to press lightly on the left hand edge of the dish and then on the right whilst you note the changes in the levels being indicated, because when dishes are blown or knocked slightly out of alignment its usually always in the horizontal (left / right) plane.

jule: The only services that 4G has the potential to affect are those received via an aerial and whose Freeview service is being received on channel 60 downwards, any tuner swamping effect being experienced by the 4G signal diminishing the further down the channel scale one goes.

Rosemary: I would completely ditch Sky and purchase a Freesat recorder such as the Foxsat - HDR / 500 G twin tuner PVR (recorder) as seen in the link, the cost of equivalent to what you would pay Sky per year for the dubious privilege of being able to record free to view programmes.

By the way the Humax referred to is 100% compatible with a twin input dish previously used for Sky+.

Tina : ITV2 and channel 5 are both on the ITV1 transmitter and so its assumed that you cannot receive it either? however as you have not disclosed your postal code area it not possible to check out the transmitter involved, therefore I suggest that you carry out another retune just in case there was a glitch in the signal when you had carried out the previous scan.

Rob: Is the booster in the coax cable from the Sky box leading to the second TV located immediately after the Sky box? which of course it should be!

The other point being, when you find that the picture on the second TV is breaking, does this clear up if you temporarily connect said set directly into the Sky boxes RF2?

Carol Churcher: If you are receiving Freeview from the Aldeburgh transmitter then this is and possibly may still be, off air due to a mains power supply failure.
