Upgrading from Sky to Freesat | Freesat

Nick Pike : Meant also to say, that if you intend to use a Freesat twin tuner recorder then that requires two inputs from the dish, as the two tuners involved operate independently from each other.

rob: Yes, but only if the interference is caused by a harmonic of another frequency, for example such as in the case of interference from a Tetra base, if though the interference is cause by general digital noise then it would affect a range of channels.

This is a link to a filter that covers interference from both sources.

Do I need to buy a booster? | Installing

BOB SUMMERS: If the picture is OK when the aerial is connected directly into one of the TVs but not when through the splitter then is the splitter referred to powered? because if not a powered version such as seen in the link is almost guaranteed to cure the problem.

BOB SUMMERS : This is another 4 output type which might be slightly more suitable for fitting into the loft as it could be screwed onto one of the roof supporting beams.

Full technical details of Freeview

dsb: According to the terrain indicator your location would appear to be line-of-sight with Sandy (trees or man made structures excluded) and as such nothing stands out as an immediately obvious reason for your difficulty in receiving C21 except the factor mentioned by yourself of an excessively high signal level, the tuners used in some HD receivers (e.g: LG / Samsung) being most intolerant to this sort of situation.

When you mention the loft aerial is "boosted so much" are you meaning that you do have some form of amplification on this aerial? because if you have then this could well be the reason for your problem and so you should try a test with the amp being bypassed, in other words not just switched off as this would immediately turn it into a high level attenuator.

Maybe you could also let me know the model numbers of your TV as well as your PVR.

rob: Base stations are capable of causing interference to certain types of receiving devices irrespective of whether or not the base station is being communicated with, albeit that the level of interference usually always increases during the times that it is.

However, although the source of your problem is most likely to be that of your neighbours base station it would still have been beneficial to have had this 100% verified "if" your neighbours were agreeable to killing the base stations power supply for about a minute whilst you are witnessing the interference refered to, the outcome of hopefully elimating any doubts that might exist as to the source of the problem.

You can though try a test of your own by switching your TV over to "analogue" mode and then carrying out an auto-tune, paying particular attention if the scanning operation hessitates (or stops) on reaching channel 60, analogue being a better mode for sniffing out some types of interference.

By the way, although not absolutely necessary, but its best to carry out the test using a short length of wire (about 24") connected into the aerial socket of your Sony.

rob: If the Alba is only indicating a quality reading of 10 on some channels and 40 on others then you should check what the indications are when connected into your bedroom TV outlet, because "if" you are referring to this reading being seen on a scale of 100? then 75+ is more in line with what it should be as the quality should always be higher than the strength.

Further info dependant on the outcome of the test.

Mr R J Hammond: If you are referring to having accidentally short circuited the LNB connection leads then disconnect the box from the power supply for about 30 seconds before reconnecting it again, as the circuitry used to supply the power to the LNB power incorporates an electronic resettable trip switch and which hopefully will have saved the voltage regulator from being damaged.
