Chinta: The problem will not be connected to the card, as a card is not really required to receive free channels because the box will work without it.

Chinta: The problem when dealing with a "no signal" or error 29 warning, both meaning the same thing, is that this type of fault can be caused by either the dish having been moved slightly out of alignment, a defect on the dishes LNB, or a problem with the cable coming from same, but though on the other hand the same symptom can be had on an older box if like many older boxes the power supply to its tuner has fallen off, this being due to the electrolytic capacitors associated with having dried out through heat over the time.

The reason why I had requested that you allow the box to cool down first before powering up again is simply because that this type of problem is generally heat related, and if a box is found to start working again when cold then this is a positive indication that its power unit is defective, whereas if it doesn't then although this can still be caused by the tuners side of the power supply having failed completely (albeit you can still see a menu) but however in most cases its not and the fault is dish related.

In other words, I only mentioned the possibility of the power supply because of this particular brand being notorious for suffering from defective power units, although it has to be said that the only positive way for anyone to determine the cause of a problem is either to try their box out on someone else's dish, or alternatively try someone else's box on your dish.

Matt: Further to that already mentioned, much as I hate to say this but I was having a rethink about the entire situation surrounding your problem, and when taking all you have said into account I am now of the opinion that spending time cable tracing is not going to result in the problem being resolved mainly because that fault finding of this nature really has to be carried out the aid of a proper signal meter for the purpose of checking where the signal exists as well as where not, something that's really essential because faulting without same really involves working in the dark and where time consuming educated guesswork is the order of the day!

Another aspect that has to be taken into consideration is that your installation still has to be looked at from the basic fact that you have no control whatsoever over the signal entering your property, and even although the concierge may well have reported that none of your neighbours are experiencing any problems this cannot be taken as a 100% cast iron guarantee that the fault is not with the incoming signal, as your neighbours are not necessarily on the same aerial feed as yourself.

However the one thing that I do find rather puzzling is by you having discovered that the signal in the master bedroom returned by your action of pressing the "A" button, this linking the middle connection on the black box with one of the outputs from the splitter, because "if" your problems have only been recently experienced and with to your knowledge nothing having been altered, then I fail to see how your master bedroom TV could have been receiving Freeview with button "B" pressed in.

As mentioned in my previous reply, I have a sneaking suspicion that the connections on these boxes have been altered at some time for purposes unknown, although this could possibly have been carried out when analogue satellite TV ceased to exist thereby making the boxes "A" input redundant, should it have been used for that purpose, and although there are various permutations that can be made with these connections the basic fact still remains that if you had previously been receiving Freeview on "both" outlet points then the problem is not one of a connection error, therefore I feel that the cause of the problem will only be revealed by an on site inspection, which to be perfectly frank about it should be the responsibility of concierge and not the occupiers of the apartments, as I am sure that the occupiers have a levy to cover this aspect built in to their charges.

Jane: I am sure that Dave Lindsay meant Ch46, Ch45 simply being a typo error, however with queries of this nature you should really have provided a post code, or alternatively one from nearby such a shop / post office as its impossible to check transmitter info without this.

michael: Yes, quite so! and with the aspect that makes matters even more complex when dealing with Sony devices being that there is no common menu standard across their range of models, something that makes it somewhat difficult to give advice on anything involving procedure, but though with the minor exception to that said being where the "Auto Service Update" facility is concerned, because should your model have this feature then its usually always found under the - Digital - set up / Technical - set up menu, a PIN code (9999) usually being required to access this section.

phil turner: No faults are being indicated on the engineering notice board as far as the Wrekin is concerned, have you as yet made any local enquiries (neighbour etc) for purposes of verifying, or not as the case may be, if others are also being affected?

If your TV or box has a "manual tuning" facility then enter mux Ch26 (BBC) into the box but do NOT press search or scan, because if the signal is there its level will be shown on the indicator bar even although it might not be strong enough to resolve a picture, although if it did appear above 50% you could try a scan and then check if BBC1 can be viewed.

Jill Rowan: If you are located in an area known for bad reception and you already have a dish installed? then purchasing a second hand Sky box is probably the best idea, but though be aware that if you purchase a Sky+ box you will NOT be able to use the recording side of the device without taking out a Sky subscription of £10.25 per month, as other wise the Sky+ box just acts like a normal box but consuming slightly more power.

By the way you don't really require a viewing card to receive free channels, as apart from the card enabling the odd free but encrypted channels to be viewed (e.g: Sony TV 157) its other purpose is to enable you to receive the correct local news, otherwise London is the default news service.

The other point to note being, that if you already have a Sky box and you purchase another then each box requires its own individual feed from the dish, Sky+ boxes "if" used for recording requiring two feeds.

Steve: The simple way to check if its the box or the LNB / cable at fault is by swapping the boxes two inputs over "if" you still have both feeds from the dish connected into the box.

If not then swap the Sky boxes feed over with one used by the Humax (preferably its LNB1) because if the LNB or cable from is defective then the fault will transfer over to the Humax.

Sandie Blickem: Queries of this nature cannot really be answered unless more info is provided such as a post code or one from somewhere nearby like a shop / post office etc.

It would also be of assistance to know what type of aerial is being used, e.g: whether roof, loft mounted or communal?

Keith: Have you checked with your neighbours to determine if they are also experiencing similar problems with BBC reception? but as far as the manual tuning of mux Ch39 is concerned, if you were genuinely on your TV or boxes manual tuning menu and entered Ch39, but with this NOT being followed by pressing search or scan, then this should only have resulted in the signal strength of anything received on mux Ch39 being indicated, because if as you have said, you seen it scrolling up to Ch42 then you must have accidentally selected the auto tune menu.

By the way, if your neighbours are not experiencing any problems then try connecting a short length of wire (about 5 feet or so) into your aerial socket and select ITV, and if this results in ITV1 being seen then carry out another auto tune whilst the wire is still being used.
