Wendy: Thanks for the update! and pleased to see that your system is now back to being 100% OK again using your new distribution amp, this being basically thanks to Mazbar's contribution reminding me about the 4G measures being incorporated into later issue devices, something which I had totally forgotten about by it not being a commonly experienced problem as yet amongst
older installations.

Stew Devine: As far as your card is concerned, yes! you can use it exactly as at present although the regional news services "might" not be correct if you are moving into another county, because the card determines which of the local news services you are able to view based on the post code held by Sky, as apart from that the card does not do very much as the box will work without it with the exception of one or two odd channels (Sony TV157) that although free, are encrypted.

On the issue of the dish, its not necessary for Sky to be involved as you can choose anyone you want, and so you should pop into your local TV shop and enquire as to the average cost of having a dish installed, whether it be by them or by someone else that carries installation work for them.

Do I need to buy a booster? | Installing

Dave Lindsay : Have you recently had any occasion to use Megalithia's terrain indicator? and should you have did you find any problems with it? the reason I ask is from about a week ago it has continually failed with me at the point where after having entered the necessary data pressing "go" results in a site called "Host Gator.com" jumping in thereby making it impossible to pass this point.

I just checked it again a few minutes ago using Marks location for reference and the situation is still the same, therefore to save me endless checking I would be much obliged if you could give it a quick check and report your findings.

Cheers / JB.

Dave Lindsay: Many thanks for your speedy response, and as you will most probably have guessed I was hoping that you would say that!

Stew Devine: As far as your viewing card being used at your new address is concerned you have nothing to worry about as nothing will change, but on the subject of your Sky box, if you disconnect the box from the mains supply then leave it for about 30 seconds or so before reconnecting it again this in most cases will restore the box to normal operation.

Stew Devine: If you do indeed have an ordinary standard sky box then once its connected into the mains nothing should stop it booting up to the point where a message appears on the screen stating "searching for listings", because if it doesn't reach that stage then this in most older boxes is caused by a fault having developed in the internal power supply, and which in practically all instances where older boxes are involved is caused by defective (leaky) electrolytic capacitors, replacing same usually rectifying the problem.

Teresa Warn: Redruth is currently listed on the engineering notice board as being "liable to interruption" and which may also affect its Alverton relay, the other main station transmitter involved being Caradon Hill.

MikeB: No duplication of reply intended, as I composed a reply before taking a phone call and then clicked "send" before checking.

Pearl Beesty: If you only have a satellite system installed then unfortunately there is no way around this problem unless the dish is temporarily moved a few inches either way to clear the scaffolding poles.

When scaffolding installers (of the more professional type) know that they are going to obstruct a satellite dish then they will usually try to position the support poles so as to miss the dish, checking with the owner of to ensure all is OK with their reception.

However as you say that your TV has Freeview then dependant on where you reside it "might" work with a set top aerial, or if not by removing the Sky boxes dish feed "F" connector and connecting a wire from the TV's aerial socket to the outer casing of the "F" connector, technically taboo but OK in an emergency situation.

If you supply a post code or one from nearby ,e.g: a shop / post office then this will enable your chances of reception using the aforementioned procedure to be assessed.

By the way, your Freesat TV will also be connected into the dish.

Stew Devine: Further to that already said, as a last resort you could try the following procedure albeit that its really intended for software updating purposes but "might" trigger the box into life, but make sure that the feed from the dish is connected before commencing.

! : Disconnect the box from the mains supply.

2 : Press and "hold in" the backup button on the front of the box (not remote) whilst powering it back up again, the important point being NOT to release the back up button until all 3 LED's on front of the box are lit up and which can take around 1 minute or so.

3 : If all goes to plan a warning message should appear on the screen telling you what NOT to do whilst the updating procedure is taking place and which can take around 10 minutes, however in reality it usually takes much longer and in some instances around 30 minutes or even longer.

If you find that the box does not respond in any way to the aforementioned then its defective.
