Detailed comparison Freeview/Sky
Tuesday 21 August 2012 5:05PM

vin roberts: Many thanks for your kind comments! and I am pleased to have been of assistance, as I fully appreciate that the various systems in use can on occasions appear to be a bit of a mystery to anyone not acquaint with them, albeit that in reality they are all very similar in certain respects.

By the way, one of my own three Humax devices is a Foxsat HDR (320Gb) and which has been in constant use for nearly three years now, and with the only problem that's ever experienced with it now and again being the well known one of the remote control (actual control not the box) locking up, cured by simply lifting the end of one of the batteries, pressing any button on the remote to discharge the offending component, then pushing the battery down again.

All equipment can suffer from the odd problem now and again, but with Humax devices its far less frequent than with most others, plus there is always plenty of assistance around from various sources including the excellent Humax forum, and where obviously advice / assistance is dedicated purely to Humax devices.

Best Regards / jb.

a.m.bourne: The cause of this problem is nothing to do with the box but the dish, as its either slightly out of alignment or water is entering the "F" connector plug on the LNB.

On the Sky box press "services - 4 - 6" and check what the signal strength / quality is sitting at, as it "has" to be around 60% (equivalent of) to avoid the problem you are experiencing, if its less than that then the dish is a fraction out of alignment in its horizontal plane, a slight nudge to the left or right of the side of the dish usually correcting the problem, albeit this being a slightly crude method.

If though the signal is well above the level mentioned when the reception is OK then the "F" connector will require to be unscrewed from the block, and then further unscrewed from the coax so that it can be dried out should this prove as being necessary,

Upgrading from Sky+HD to Freesat+HD | Freesat
Tuesday 21 August 2012 5:27PM

Rob: Nothing will really change in that respect, as all that will happen is that the Sky boxes in the other rooms will stop being able to receive the programmes that are dedicated to the Sky package, or recording anything or playing back same "if" a Sky+ box is involved in any of the other rooms.

You can check what you will be able to view by simply removing the Sky card from the boxes in the other rooms and running through the EPG list.

Georgina: "If" you are using a Sky HD box then use the following procedure.

Satellite signal check

You can check the strength of your signal using your Sky remote control:

1... Press services on your Sky remote control and you will see the main
menu with Options highlighted.

2... Highlight the Settings menu using the right arrow button and press select.

3... Use the left/right arrows to scroll to Signal and press select.

4.. The grey bars displayed will show you the strength of the signal to your Sky+HD box.

If this still doesn't work then please give the model number of box you are using.

Nick: If Suffolk, then why is the GU post code being specifically mentioned in brackets? (not seen on your actual posting).

Rowridge (Isle Of Wight, England) transmitter
Wednesday 22 August 2012 7:40AM

Margaret Newman: And in addition to that said by Mazbar, I just had a check at DUK's trade predictions for reception from Rowridge in your area and which has to be said doesn't exactly inspire much confidence as far as reliability of reception is concerned, as the commercial stations (10:ITV3 / 11: Pick TV / 12: Yesterday etc) have the permanent status of variable and thats when received on Rowridges vertically polarised transmissions.

Have a look up at you new aerial to make sure that it has been installed vertically (elements pointing up / down) and NOT horizontally, also it wouldn't go amiss to check with some neighbours if they experience problems when on the "same channels" as you find problems with.

By the way, these Panasonic TV's have some of the best tuners around and can give reasonably glitch free reception in situations where some other well known brands would struggle, and so the TV can be left out of the equation.

AndyW: If only one of the twin feeds to the bedrooms "standard" Sky box is being used then you can extend the one that's not used to feed another "standard" box located in another bedroom, this done by simply using a length of satellite grade coax with "F" connectors at each end and an "F" coupler used between the unused second feed and your extension.

A Sky box will work without a card except for one or two channels like Sony TV 157 etc, but you can check what you will see by simply removing the card from the standard Sky box and running through the EPG list.

By the way the viewing card, unless Sky's "free to view" is being referred to) only gives access to channels that are dedicated to a Sky package and likewise requires a subscription.

Dover (Kent, England) Full Freeview transmitter
Wednesday 22 August 2012 1:13PM
Farnham

Nick: I only queried this because when I seen your posting listed in "UK.Free TV / Your Comments / Last 50" (as copied and pasted in below) with the Guildford post code specifically printed in brackets at the end of your posting, this "not" seen on the actual posting as Briantist's site scrubs anything in brackets positioned at the end of a posting, I was rather intrigued by this as I am aware that Woodbridge is your usual postal code area.

By the way the Digital UK tradeview predictor also indicates the GU post code and still does on your last posting to Dave, and why Farnham is shown under your name / day / posting made time.

Go up to the very top of the page, and on the right hand side under "Site Settings" make sure that the settings are cleared and that your correct post code is entered.

Heading referred to:
Freeview on the Dover transmitter: Nick All fine from Dover here in Suffolk, unlike our own transmitters.

Dover (Kent, England) Full Freeview transmitter
Wednesday 22 August 2012 1:20PM

Nick: Another attempt at giving the item referred to

Freeview on the Dover transmitter: Nick All fine from Dover here in Suffolk, unlike our own transmitters. (GU90LT)

The brackets were cut off again in the item copied and pasted into this reply box as they were at the end of "my" posting, so hopefully this additional text "might" stop it happening again.

Wendy: LG manuals really do leave a lot to be desired as they are not dedicated to a particular model but of few of them within the range, "if" no joy with what has been said try pressing the very top right hand button on the TV's remote control marked TV / Rad and select TV (not DTV) and if your TV has analogue capabilities then it should be accessible on that choice, then just follow the advice already given regarding carrying out an auto-tune on the analogue mode whilst the Sky box is turned on and with its RF2 linked to the LG's aerial input socket via the magic eye.

You have to remember that the Sky boxes RF output is "analogue" mode just like the older TV system and not digital, this being why you cannot find it.
