I have the same problem on all my fm radios, mono or stereo, with external or internal aerials. It started on 28th Jan. Last week it lasted from 12noon to 5-7pm every day except Saturday (4th). Today (6th) it was going from 9am. Usually I get excellent, quiet reception from Whitehawk.
I have received an automatic response from the BBC but I am a little sceptical about their explanation in terms of atmospheric pressure (posted above). I have kept track of this on the BBC Weather site & the values do not correspond with the times when interference is present or at its worst.

Thank you for your response Briantist
I agree that there is a high pressure region over Europe but I wonder whether this can be the complete explanation for two reasons:

1. Although the interference now seems to be continuous, last week from Tues to Fri it only occurred between 12noon & 5-7pm although no significant change in barometric pressure was recorded on the weather site during the day. On Sat there was no interference at all although the recorded pressure was identical to that on Fri (1040).

2. I have lived in my present house for 38 years & have always had good quality fm tuners & radios. For the most part I have had excellent reception & have certainly never experienced interference like this before. I find it difficult to believe that the current weather patterns have never occurred in the past.

One of my tuners has a signal strength meter. On this R3 (91.3 mHz) consistently reads lower than R4 & quite significantly lower than Radio Sussex & Heart. While I know that these meters are not particularly good, I cannot help wondering whether the apparent weakness of the R3 transmission makes it particularly susceptible to interference.

Thank you for the explanation Briantist. No interference today, thank goodness, though the high pressure area over the N. Sea is still there, see:

For the third time this year there is a problem with BBCRadio3 on FM (92.3). This time it is a loud & persistent low frequency hum (50Hz?). Present on mono & stereo & on all tuners & radios with external or internal aerials. It seems to have started today, 2nd June

The hum on BBCRadio 3 has been reported by another Brighton listener:

Sunday am. The hum has now been joined by a continuous loud 'frying' reminiscent of the 'interference' experienced in February(discussed above) making the service unlistenable. It appears that no one at the BBC bothers to monitor the Whitehawk FM output.
