It is possible that, to reduce mutual interference between transmitters, effective radiated power is experimentally being reduced or radiation patterns modified to reduce signal strength in some directions. But they are unlikely to inform us... If observations vary, high-pressure is another factor that can affect interference from more distant transmitters, which will disappear again under low atmospheric pressure. This is frequently the case near Woolacombe.

Quoted from above : "You might be wondering what this means for BBC Local Radio or our radio services for the Nations. Not a lot, I'm sorry to say. As you might know, our Local Radio services and our radio services for the Nations are carried in capacity which we buy from a commercial multiplex operator in each area. The expansion of the commercial multiplexes is tied up with the Government's digital radio action plan. There is extensive work going on across the industry on that front and we expect some more news at the end of this year." Let us hope it is good news! The transmitters listed today seem to focus on higher population density areas. Will there be infill relays for more remote or low-lying areas for the national networks - and ultimately for the local services?

"...if you use a Freeview box for the sole purpose of radio, you don't need a TV licence." Might be difficult to prove to the jackboot lads, but in law, yes! If - when - DAB equals FM reception everywhere, including local BBC, and portable and incar DAB outclasses FM, and radios are equally cheap and battery-friendly, this discussion will become redundant. (Our new car cannot be equipped with a DAB radio - incredibly worrisome!) We are too far down the road to go back, but uphold the hope that DAB promises will become reality. In case a solar pulse should mischeviously err this way, I shall keep my crystal set operational :-).

Christina, see earlier posts in this thread. If you get a tivu box and register it to a codice civil in Italy, you will be able to receive all the tivu channels without the scrambling nuisance. Search on Italian websites for more info on tivu.

Trevor Harris: Interesting. I have occasionally wondered if the jack-plug on my phones was at fault when DAB stations didn't sound as stereo should - or does on a live broadcast, such as the Proms.

Anyone have authoritative expertise on this?

Even my crystal set would sound superb on B&W speakers - with a little help from a hifi amp...

Music on DAB should be in genuine stereo and at bitrates that sound at least as good as FM on the same speakers or headphones. But it ain't necessarily so... Officialdom seems to concentrate on DAB coverage one day equally FM, without the same passion for audio quality. Hmmm...

My new VW has no DAB and a DAB retrofit is not possible due to the dashboard design. VW will have thought this through.

Tonight, we are admonished to have a battery-powered radio to receive *local* stations and a torch to hand during the expected storm over southern reaches. Were this to happen post switchover, few citizens of the realm would have a battery-powerable DAB radio - unless, by then, the market bestows us affordable eco-friendly battery-nibbling DAB radios comparable to current AM/FM portables. Even if this were given, will we have local BBC radio receivable on DAB as now on AM/FM ? The official pronouncements and implementation are fuzzy over this aspect of DAB coverage. Am I bothered? Probably...

These "transmitter engineering" notifications are what Mick Jagger would call "useless information". WHAT ARE THEY ACTUALLY DOING ? DSO is done, they have kicked us out of the 800MHz band. So what on earth are they up to now with this secretive engineering work? We are paying for non-ending disruption and are entitled to know WHY !
