DAB is local, FM is local. AM allows reception of distant stations, eg UK regional and European radio. (I receive all the national DAB muxes, but local BBC only on AM.) We will not be able to adopt DAB+ in the foreseeable future; however, for the interim DAB and FM together offer comparable bandwidth. On DAB and FM, many competing stations are sound-alike. Should supply and demand lead to a reduction of the number of stations available, DAB only might eventually be sufficient for listening needs. Genuine coverage, take-up and commercial viability will decide!

PS: a more elegant version of the Pure Highway DAB adapter would do a lot to increase DAB
take-up until all new cars include a DAB/FM radio.

Internet radio is great, but not truly portable. Radio by 3G gets kinda expensive! I bought a personal DAB. It works fine at home on a hill, but not on the road, in town or at the workplace - yet. I am not aware of plans for France, Germany and Spain to switch off MW and LW, so my tweaked AM receiver should be good for a while yet:-) That is, of course, a niche interest. If we keep FM with DAB, Im sure thex will offer good reception and choice for most listeners. Interesting times ahead!

Brian, Ive been doing that for some time with my PICO, although the range is limited. I was thinking of when away from home. Of course, mine is a minority interest. Once DAB coverage is at least as good as FM now, almost everybody will receive what they want. It will be interesting to see what internet via 800MHz bestows, including radio. Investors will need to get their fat bids back, but if there is an affordable flatrate enabling streaming of internet radio, I would be happy!

Matt: If you already have a setup for 13°E, enter the MediaSat Premium Calcio parameters and check the signal strength and quality bars displayed. If ok, a valid card and receiver would work. On sites such as lyngsat and kingofsat you can check the footprints of the MediaSat transponder to see if the beam covers the UK. Anybody here who views Premium Calcio might be able to confirm this independently, of course.

Matt: Paste the link below into your browser. Premium is no longer broadcast. Maybe it is Sky Calcio that you want. Check the listed channels in your receiver to see if you get good signal strength and quality with the blank screen. If ok, you will need to find out whether you can get a valid Italian Sky "VideoGuard" card that will work in your receiver. It may only be available via a bona-fide Italian address and may only work in specific receivers. Link:

The piggy-bank is destitute, thanks to a PURE One Flow. The associated website is badly designed, but the radio works well once set up. WiFi range is limited. Pity there is no external aerial or socket. With SW in agony, only on MW and LW will foreign and distant stations be available when away from WiFi - unless 3G streaming becomes affordable...

The piggy wouldnt stretch to the £35 battery pack, so I might try an external one with D-cells. I expect the drain will be fairly high. My Asda personal DAB is better, unsurprisingly, but DAB is very patchy hereabouts. As WiFi means staying within range of the router, mains operation is only a minor inconvenience. For foreign stations, The Only Way Is WiFi - well, almost! A notebook would be an alternative, but not as practical as the threefold Pure or similar.

Max, your dish and sat-receiver should get Italian channels on 13°E. There might be signal break-up in heavy rain. Exact positioning of the dish and good-quality
sat-cable are important.
