Hi Guys. Amstrad Sky Plus box (about 5 years old) which has recently been intermittently failing recordings with "no signal" as the reason. I find I can make it record the channel manually when it won't do so if set to record in the planner. I read somewhere this was likely to be a failure of the signal on the second input?

Looking at the signal strength bar for Input 1 it's fine, but the bar for Input 2 is varying between fine and zero (not locked) as I watch it.

Switching the two input cables at the back of the box gives me no signal on either input.

I have looked at the termination of the cables at the box end and there doesn't seem to be anything to cause a short. I've tried the "power off" reset (Method 1). Is it worth me trying the others or totally resetting the box or does this sound like a cabling problem / faulty box and it's time to call Sky?

Great site by the way - thanks in advance for any answers.

Thanks jb. I've fiddled about with both cables and tried plugging and unplugging as you suggest and most frustratingly it seems that sometimes the number 2 input is OK and sometimes not (no matter which cable is plugged in). I don't seem to be able to reliably reproduce any results except that the recordings all failed again this evening!

I'm still thinking faulty cable / connection / box input though so time to call Sky I guess!

Thanks jb - I called Sky and they are sending an Engineer (couldn't get an appointment till Saturday though which is a bit rubbish). I'll let you know what happens but thanks for your help!

Just to let you know Sky Engineer came today and replaced both input cables as he said there was no signal on one of them. He was not impressed to see joints in the cables near the dish and replaced the whole thing with one piece of twin cable, also giving me more cable at the box end (so I can now pull it right out of the unit!)and making a much tidier job of hiding the cable than before. All seems good now so a very satisfactory outcome all round.

Thanks for the good advice though. This is a most helpful site.
