Clare: You need

1) A rooftop aerial pointing at a Freeview transmitter;

2) A DVB-T or DVB-T2 card or USB adaptor for your PC

3) Suitable software, such as Windows 7 Media Center.

Merlot: Yes, the power increased. "Medium" signal strength is usually the correct level.

Ruth Spearing: No, you can't easily do that, the whole point is that Sky+HD does the recording.

Michael O'Pray: Generally speaking, digital reception is "all or nothing". If you can perfectly decode the multiplex, you get everything, if you can't you get nothing at all.

So, if your signal is unstable there will be times when you get perfect reception and times when you get nothing.

Shaun: Sounds quite typical for a loft based aerial. Move the aerial to the roof for stable reception.

Nick: There will be NO reductions to the transmitter power at Aldeburgh (or anywhere else) as I said above that it will be incoming international signals that cause interference.

I would guess your "herringbone" is being caused by Bluebell Hill, which is directly "behind" your location and uses similar frequencies.

"Dutch" signals are unlikely to cause you problems at your location as they are at 90 degrees to your line of sight.
