angie: a bit more information would be useful...we may be good but not mind readers! Where are you, what size dish do you have, LNB, receiver, whats the on screen message on BBC1 or BBC2, can you get ITV1,2,3,4?
In some north eastern areas of spain an 80cm satellite dish will do, in others a 2.4m dish is required!

a few things to try
unplugging the box wait for 30 seconds and reboot it.
go to the menu system and reduced the time for "instant rewind" or turn it off altogether.
I only notice a slight delay when going to HD channels, maybe somethng to do with the amount of data HD channels use

a sky box will noit work on a virgin system (if thats the cable you are attaching it to).
IF your sky box is saying no satellite signal then:
check allthe cable connections, check the satellite dish alignmment, check the LNB on the dish is OK, try another (friends) sky box to make sure it is not your sky box that has gone.
You only need a pjone line for new sky contracts, and if you want to vote or buy things via the TV.

penny: if you are getting no signal then: are you sure the dish is pointing tot he correct satellite, have you checked all the cable connections, LNB may have gone and need replacing.
If you cannot get the correct ID or Network, then your dish is pointing to the wrong satellite. I think network is 0002.

Donna: you need to pay sky for the ability to use the recording functions of a Sky+ box.
So do you pay them a subscription?
If so and you are unable to record, or get your PAY channels (whats the message on the screen when you go to your Sky Pay channels?) then perhaps contact Sky to get them to sort it out.

Sky 3 will move to Sky channel 152.
Sky3+1 moves from 223 to 153.
I think nothing is changing on Freeview.

Channels on Freesat receivers and channels on Sky receiver all come from the same satellites. So you can swap your freesat box for a sky box, and you will not have to move the dish at all.
You can run a number of receivers from a single dish, as long as the LNB has the right number of outputs for the receivers you want to run
A sky box with no viewing card gets the same channels as a freesat box.

Helen: a Freesat box gets "free to air" channels, ie those that do not require a sky card.
A Sky box with no card also gets the "free to air" channels - the same channels as a freesat box (apart from Men and Movies that is only on Freesat)...which is what i said in the previous post: "A sky box with no viewing card gets the same channels as a freesat box." - where did I say "you get more with a sky box with no card"??
A Sky box with a (non subscription) card in will get Fiver, Five USA, Sky 3, and a few others that Freesat does not get.
Getting a Freesat box will only get you Men and Movies extra so in reality you will actually LOSE channels by "upgrading" to Freesat - unless you go for a HD Freesat box in which case you wil get BBCHD BBC1HD and ITVHD.
To get a lot more channels than you curently get you will need to subscribe to Sky.

In the past, I have seen that you can record and not play back if your card has not been paired correctly by sky to the box.
If you get Sky Sports, or get the upgrade message, then the card should be paired and working. If you get "wrong card" then the pairing has not been done.
It may also help if you do either a planner rebuild (like a PC defrag), or a full system reset (ie full format of the hard drive - you will lose your recordings with this).
It may be that the hard drive has gone and a replacement is required.
