UK TV comes from 4 satellites, each with their own characteristics and footprints, and the channels are apread over various frequencies on these 4 satellites. Thats why you can get Sky News on an small (60-80cm) dish all over spain, but need a 2.4m dish for some areas for BBC1&2.

Tim: to record and playback a sky pay channel you need to have your sky card activated for sky+ and paired to the box. An unpaired card sometimes allows the recording of free to air channels only.
You either have a cable problem, and LNB problem, or a box problem.

Roy: Note that you press the buttons in the sequency Brian says, but when you press the second 0 and 1 nothing actually happens on the screen, until you press the select.
For SD Sky boxes the process is Services, 4 0 1 select
For HD boxes the process is Services, 0 0 1 select

I am surprised you get BBC1/2/3/4 on an 80cm dish where you are. Normally a 1.25m (or bigger) dish is required.
Still, if you used to getthe channels, and do not now, then check the dish alignment, or LNB, or cableing. Motors are not always 100% so it may not be going to the correct location.

Sky boxes work fine, even if there is no 2D access. Many use Sky boxes on in fringe areas, like where I am, with 80cmn dishes, and do not get 2D reception, but the boxes still work OK. True they do not get FTA BBC, ITV, C4's, (which in some areas require a 2.4m dish) but a Sky box will work as long as it get ANY signals from ANY of the 4 UK TV satellites.

No signals issues can be down to a number of things:
LNB has gone, dish realignment is required, or there are cabling issues.
As one box works OK, and the other does not, then that could be down to the port on the LNB going, cable issues, or receiver issues.
The Software update will only work if you have access to the 11778 main Sky frequency.
This is the same frequency that the sky boxes use to boot up. In some areas of Spain, even in big 2.4m dishes, this frequency can be tricky to receive, especially around 5pm, when it is at its weakest, and the boxes just show "no signal, or searching for listings". Sometimes the boxes get a sniff of the signal and boot up correctly, but sometimes you have to help the box boot up but changing this frequency to another frequency, that carries a small amount of the date that it carried on 11778, but enough to get the box up and running... you can see this process here http://www.satandpcguy.com/Site/sky_satellite_default_transponder_frequency_settings_costa_blanca_spain.php
This does not help reception, it does not make channels last longer, and it is normal for this frequency to revert back to 11778, it is just to help boot the sky box up.

I know htta osme people in our area have upgraded theire LNB to an Unverto Ultra Black, which ahs a very good reputation, which ahs helped with signal loss. But would suggest dish needs realigning

I understand the hack for activatating the recording functions on a Sky+ box with no subscription is for one model of Sky+ box only, and requires "flashing" the boxes memory - ie you are tampering with the boxes software. It may work, but the legalities of this would be interesting. Surprised this is being allowed to be sold on ebay!

George: there are 4 advertising regions for Five, one is free to air, and the others 3 require a working Sky card to view (they are "free to view".
If your 105 has been allocated to you as a Sky card version, then you will need to add the FTA version of Five to your "other channels" list - via the "add channels" feature. This will not replace the "Sky card" version of Five on 105. And the settings will revetr back to normal, as ou only change them for adding "five" to your "other channels" list only.
However, if you have cancelled Sky, I am surprised you cannot get Five, as a cancelled subscription card should normally revert to being a "freesatfromsky" card and still allow access to Five, Fiver, Five USA...

to get UK TV via internet you will need to use / pay for a VPN, rather than reply on free proxies (you never know who set them up, what they can grab from your connection, and they are here to day, and need chaning tomorrow). Even then, to use the skyplayer you will need to subscribe to Sky TV anyway. and not all channels on sky are on skyplayer.
