Most transmissions are 1080i/50 some are 1080p/25, your TV is simply telling you what you are getting. Some programmes, such as Top Gear, contain both formats.

Signal breaks on com 7 winter hill seem to be an ongoing problem. If you look at the Digital Spy site you will see that Arqiva agreed to this problem in September and fixed it but it seems to be returning. Please go to the Digital UK website to report this matter as they only investigate after two or three complaints. I'm afraid that complaining on forums is ineffective. Com7 seems to be cobbled together from old junk and seems not to be monitored.

Thank you very much for that information as I have been using the SD service again recently ( my wife was grumbling about the drop outs even though they were few and far between).

Report the problem to Digital UK. It seems to be an ongoing problem at winter hill. It was fixed once but seems to be back. NB Broadcasting organisations do not read forums, faults need to be reported.

Thank you for all the time and effort you have spent on this problem. As you probably know there has also been a log running thread on the Digital Spy site as well. We also got Arqiva to admit to a fault earlier in the year which they fixed but it has come back again albeit not as badly.

The main problem is that not that many people watch BBC4 HD via Freeview so that, combined with the fact that the SD service is OK, means that complaints are few. Unfortunately many people think that posting on a forum is enough but broadcasters don't read forums because of all the "odd" posts on them. Like us you followed the correct procedure and it looks like it will be fruitful.

If anyone else is experiencing these problems, not severe signal loss but the type listed on previous posts, please put in an official complaint via the Digital UK website.

Michael, please report the problem on the Digital UK website. The problem started simultaneously for everyone in I think August, It was fixed but has returned and seems difficult to locate and fix probably due to the winter weather. I live in an area with a very high signal strength, the signal occasionally can be seen to fluctuate for a second on the TV's signal strength meter but because my signal is strong it usually doesn't show on screen, other people with lower signal strengths may not be so lucky. Sometime though the signal drops to zero causing pixilation or a no signal message. My wife is also intolerant of this fault so I record her programmes in SD. The problem affects everything on com7 and ruined the first part of the BBC proms season, fortunately it was fixed for a time and the rest of the season was ok.

The fluctuation in signal strength that I see isn't prior to anything, if I hadn't had the strength meter on I would have been unaware of anything. The drop outs cause the meter to show zero strength and quality, the fluctuations show sometimes quite a large drop in level but only a small one in quality hence no effect on the picture but I do live in a high signal strength area. Although it is 18 miles away I can see not just the mast but the hill as well from my bedroom window. There are no fluctuates on the other coms including the new local one. I'm on the edge of the beam for the older GMAN com but it usually works despite very low signal strength and iffy quality.

The problems started for everyone at the same time and in my case ceased for a while after Arqiva's first fix. I have two independent systems one of which is on a very good aerial and the other on a fairly poor one, the faults occur on both systems at the same time. It is not therefore too little/much signal. H.J.Hill has conformation from Arqiva of a fault, see P118 19th December.
In my professional experience, fixing an intermittent fault like this is very difficult and frustrating, you are sure you have the solution only to be disappointed.

Frequency of fault varies and I haven't watched com 7 much recently, maybe once an hour but you can go a long time with no problems. I always record Film review from BBC News HD at 17.45 on a Friday, last week there was a bit of pixilation but not before or since.
