Reclaiming the word radio - James Cridland

Reclaiming the word 'radio' Posted on Monday, November 15th, 2010 at 1126 am. It always strikes me as mad to the point of lunacy to see radio stations not use the word radio in their logo. How on earth are you supposed to know that talkSPORT is a radio station, for example, if youve not heard of the brand before - james.cridland.net

ITV fights back as advertising rebounds - Business News, Business - The Independent

Revenues rose by 11 per cent to 1.46bn in the nine months to September, comfortably above the 1.31bn booked for the same period last year. The gains were spurred on by a 16 per cent increase in television-advertising revenues in the three months to September, a period which coincided with part of the football World Cup. ITV expects the figure to ease to 10 per cent in the final quarter. - independent.co.uk

ITV.coms video views fall year on year | Media | guardian.co.uk

Susan Boyle helped drive a massive traffic spike on ITV.com last year. ITV.com's performance was a sour note in an otherwise upbeat financial update from the broadcaster today, with video views falling by 6 year on year in the first nine months of 2010. The broadcaster revealed today that average monthly video views have fallen by about 1m year on year in the nine months to the end of September to 15.6m, although ITV.com's monthly unique users increased 13 to 9 million over the same period. - guardian.co.uk

Will Treasury return to pensioners free TV licences plan?

The full fascinating story has yet to be told of what happened between 15-19 October, when the BBC's future was effectively decided and arguably secured for the next seven years. The Corporation and its allies furiously tried to stop George Osborne taking a big chunk of licence fee income to help fund other government departments. They all argued that it would be wrong to divert BBC income to fund a government social programme. - bbc.co.uk

Discovery Networks and Scripps in running for Virgins UKTV stake | Media | guardian.co.uk

It is thought that a deadline for final bids set for around the middle of last month was extended as the remaining bidders sought more time to try to solve outstanding issues, other than the sale price, before tabling a deal. This is likely to sustain the business, which has a turnover of about 200m a year, and in particular Gold, for about 20 years. Discovery has the benefit of having worked with the BBC as a commercial partner since 1997 in the joint venture and has just extended the factual programming co-production element of the relationship until 2014. - guardian.co.uk

Channel 6 would favour local programming - Telegraph

There has been much scepticism in recent months as to whether Mr Hunt's vision for a nationwide network of local TV channels is commercially viable. Mr Shott is looking at other proposals but Mr Horwood's is understood to be one of the preferred options. However, it is understood one concern held by Mr Shott's team is that the geographic spectrum suggested by Mr Horwood to carry the channel will not be sufficient to cover certain parts of the country. - telegraph.co.uk

Its audiences who make and break TV stars l Maggie Brown | Media | The Guardian

The Miriam OReilly and BBC tribunal doesn't focus on the fact that it is actually audiences who decide on the stars they love or hate. This group of media achievers, one of whose founder members is Sheila Hancock, plays a gutsy role in promoting the achievements of women across these fickle sectors. Now it seems the next really fundamental cause has presented itself via an industrial tribunal the issue and practice of ageism, ruthless station controllers drumming wrinkly women off screen, and excluding, without regret, unknown others. - guardian.co.uk

BT and TalkTalk win judicial review of Digital Economy Act on all four grounds | Technology | guardian.co.uk

TalkTalk is challenging the Digital Economy Act with BT. It does little to change the course of the controversial Act in the short term, but it stops the dust settling. Digital Economy Act to get judicial review - November - 2010 - Which? News

The act, which aims to curb illegal filesharing, was passed in April prior to the coalition government coming to power. BT and TalkTalk feel that the act was rushed through parliament, and are concerned that the basic rights and freedoms of internet users are impinged upon. Future of Digital Economy Act in limbo until next year, say lawyers | Technology | guardian.co.uk

The house of commons during a reading of the digital economy bill, April 2010 The Digital Economy Act, which has divided creative industries since its first inception, has hit what may turn into a considerable stumbling block. He heard both sides and fairly quickly came to the view that there was a case to answer. Privately, though, lawyers familiar with the proceedings suspect BT and TalkTalk don't rate their chances of an injunction being granted, and that the review is little more than an adjunct to the pair's campaign against the act. - guardian.co.uk

Domestic woe for the BBCs Earl of White City | Markets Analysis

Forget the historical nitpicking, Downton Abbey has been a huge success. Part melodramatic soap opera and part historical romance, it is a quality production that has achieved record audiences because of its appeal to a British society that remains obsessed with class.
