Ofcom recommends cross-media ownership rules should be relaxed | Media | guardian.co.uk

Ofcom has recommended the liberalisation of local cross-media ownership regulations, which could enable a single company to control newspapers, a TV licence and radio stations in one local area. Ofcom was asked under the Labour government to review local cross-media ownership rules and last November recommended liberalisation that would only bar a company from owning all three of more than 50 of the local newspapers in a regional market, a radio station and the ITV licence for the area. When Jeremy Hunt took over as culture secretary in May, he asked Ofcom to look at a further liberalisation that would axe the rule relating to newspaper ownership restrictions. - guardian.co.uk

BT said that it would compensate people who had been affected by giving them a months free Sky Sports, which would normally cost 6.99 or 11.99 a month. However customers must also sign up for a BT phone line and BT broadband, taking the total cost to over 30 a month. They will get one months free rental, which will be worth 6.99 or 11.99 depending on their package. - telegraph.co.uk

The number of new channels being launched on Sky has fallen 70 this year, as independent broadcasters struggle to establish themselves, a new report has claimed. According to research conducted by broadcast operator Information TV, there were 24 new channels launched on Sky's digital TV platform in the first half of 2010, compared to 72 in the whole of last year and 71 in 2008. ITV to tinker with micropayments The Register

Only half of ITV's income will come from advertising within five years, the company announced today. Micropayments have been the holy grail of online payments for 15 years, and always run into two large obstacles. One is the reluctance amongst punters to pay small amounts for content, which contrasts with the willingness of punters to pay really quite large amounts for pay TV and broadband. - theregister.co.uk
