Barry Dillers Aereo Service Challenges Cable Television - NYTimes.com

In front of each of the 10 chairs was a leather case holding a fresh tablet of paper, with a sharpened pencil placed above it, just so. Aereo uses antenna farms to capture broadcast signals that can then be streamed on the Internet and viewed on a device of the customers choosing. Given that the service cuts out the cable television middleman and pays no retransmission fees to the programming producers, its a business idea that will sow chaos, disruption and turmoil. - nytimes.com

Freeview broadcasters in the UK face annual fees that could add 240m a year to Blighty's coffers by 2020. Ofcom wants to, effectively, charge telly stations every 12 months to transmit over the airwaves, just like mobile phone networks must regularly cough up cash to continue using their licensed radio frequencies for chatter and data. The retransmission of works via the Internet cant escape the authorization of the copyright holders, the Luxembourg- based court ruled. The case, which was triggered by a dispute pending at a London court, establishes the scope of broadcasters rights under EU copyright rules and whether these include the right to prohibit broadcasts by a service such as online streaming service TVCatchup. - businessweek.com

Ian Burrell: Is Channel 4 a sinking ship – or is it just in need of a shake-up?

Fighting discrimination and doing things differently, it's what Channel 4 was set up for, 30 years ago last November. The broadcaster's ratings for the first two months of the year have been falling and, in what some regard as a pivotal moment for the industry, the main channel has seen its audience beaten by those of the combined ITV digital channels. Most alarmingly, it has lost goodwill in the independent production sector, the lifeblood of its creative ideas for three decades. - independent.co.uk
