BBC3 v BBC4 - which station is best equipped to avoid cuts? - Media - guardian.co.uk

Small Teen, Big World has been one of BBC3's most sucessful shows. In the BBC's ideal world, both would exist as they currently are, offering something entertaining and informative for the difficult-to-reach 18- to 35-year-olds, and those who want more arts and highbrow viewing. Along with cutting BBC2 daytime shows and late-night programming, executives are looking at the impact of scaling back some of what BBC4 does. - guardian.co.uk

BBC News - Local TV news could be sponsored

Mr Hunt wants around 50 new local TV stations to open by 2015. Speaking in Birmingham, he said the sponsorship of bulletins could provide crucial funds for the fledgling stations. Mr Hunt added that rules on political impartiality and taste and decency would not be relaxed for the local stations. - bbc.co.uk

Coming up next: continuity announcers - Television radio - guardian.co.uk

Oh to be a continuity announcer getting paid for sitting and watching TV all day while making a couple of pithy or factual announcements an hour to an audience you never have to interact with really doesn't seem that much of a chore it sounds more like a walk in the park, without the effort of actually walking. However, like most of the shows they so gleefully promote, the reality's nowhere near as entertaining as the trailer. Sure, there are a few legal and compliance responsibilities around strong language, flashing images and the like, but it still sounds pretty cushy. - guardian.co.uk

BSkyB told to weaken stranglehold on Hollywood movies - Media - guardian.co.uk

The industry watchdog ruled that the prices charged by Sky to Virgin are too high, meaning Virgin cannot make a business selling films to its customers. Under the present system, a number of Hollywood blockbusters are available only on Sky on pay-TV in the UK. The satellite broadcaster spends about 280m a year on buying films, more than its budget for Sky News and other entertainment channels. - guardian.co.uk

Dogs are becoming addicted to digital TV: 4-legged friends with square eyes - Mail Online

Experts say the number of canines addicted to television is set to rise as the nation continues to make the switch from analogue to digital - because the clearer picture is easier for dogs to watch. The average British dog is happy to sit for 50 minutes each day in front of their favourite shows and many get excited by theme tunes, the survey reveals. With London next on the list for the big switchover, canines in the capital are sure to be delighted. Labradors are 'top dog' when it comes to viewing hours per day, with some clocking up to two hours in front of the telly every day. - dailymail.co.uk

BBC4 is worth fighting for - Media - The Guardian

Danish detective drama The Killing was an unexpected breakout hit for BBC4. International film is served by the annual world cinema awards and an ongoing commitment to the sort of intelligent arthouse fare that used to have a home on BBC2. As the campaign to save 6 Music proved, making a noise about these proposals before they have gone too far can make a difference. - guardian.co.uk

Big broadband names must back £530m government drive to reach rural areas, experts warn - Technology - guardian.co.uk

Big ISPs such as BT are crucial to the success of the government's plans for better broadband, it is claimed. Photograph Graham Turner for the Guardian The government's 530m drive to get super-fast broadband to the UK's rural communities will fail unless more is done to encourage the biggest providers to reach the most remote customers, industry insiders have warned. Without them, demand from consumers looks likely to be so low that the consortium, Digital Region, may be forced to abandon the aim of selling to householders and focus its attention on businesses and the public sector. - guardian.co.uk

BBC4 expected to be scaled back in cost-saving plan - Media - guardian.co.uk

BBC3 is likely to remain largely intact but may be asked to concentrate on its key areas of factual and comedy. The youth-focused general entertainment channel only airs a few dramas, such as supernatural series Being Human, but could be asked to scale back on the genre. Management fears an outcry if BBC3 is tampered with and it has proved a useful tool for attracting young audiences to the BBC. - guardian.co.uk

Freeview selects T-VIPS for HD distribution

This network is used by UK free-to-air service Freeview as well as by a few pay TV operators. The network will support SFN operation at least at a regional level, which reduces the amount of spectrum needed but requires synchronizing transmitters to avoid destructive interference between neighbouring ones. This prevents service outages caused by DVB-T2 modulator resynchronization, a process that typically takes time to complete. - broadcastengineering.com

Peter Last, chairman of the Walsall Pensioners Convention, has stressed that the majority of the 32,000 homes are most likely occupied by elderly people who wont know what to do once the first phase of the switchover begins in a few weeks time. Coming soon: all the TV news that's fit to ignore - Comment is free - The Observer

That phrase was coined, I should explain for the benefit of those unfamiliar with the chaotic days of the Major administration, by the first of Hunt's predecessors, David Mellor, who in his short tenure, revealed himself to be a big fan of fun. Last week the government named 65 suitable homes for local stations. The word seems less appetising when applied to politics and the media local councils, local elections, local newspapers and local radio feel less buzzy. - guardian.co.uk

Despite areas such as Hemel Hempstead, Bedford and Stoke being included among those chosen, nowhere in Northamptonshire was picked.
