Sixty five towns and citiesare in the running to pioneer the UK's first local television services, Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt has announced. With the first wave of licences due to be awarded next year, the eligible areas including Aberdeen, Birmingham, Cambridge, Guildford, Leeds and Southampton are being asked to make the case for why their town should be one of the first to bid for the service. UK must allow satellite dishes - Advanced Television

There are many thousands of UK residents who at least so far have been forbidden to have satellite dishes because of restrictive covenants on their homes or apartments. People living in so called conservation areas and listed buildings are particularly limited in what they may fix to their homes. The case, brought by Swedish tenants, has found in favour of the tenants who are of Iraqi origin and who had taken their government to court after being evicted by their landlord after installing a dish. The Court ordered that 13,950 be paid to the tenants as compensation. - advanced-television.com

Shock, awe: British government agrees that copyright has gone too far

The British government today pledged PDF to enact significant changes to copyright law, including orphan works reforms and the introduction of new copyright exceptions. Responding to an independent study done earlier this year, the government has also endorsed the creation of a digital copyright exchange to facilitate licensing. This is evidently not referring to the power of copyright holders tocompel individual ISPs to block infringing sites after a lawsuit, but to a more comprehensive system whereby the government maintains a list of sites that all ISPs in the country would be required to block. - arstechnica.com

Ariel - Digital stations get the extra factor

4 August 2011 Last updated at 0841 The BBC might want to align most of its digital radio channels closer to the bigger networks, but latest listening figures show that the sister stations are most definitely doing it for themselves. The family-focused archive and comedy service is now officially the country's most popular digital-only network with an audience of 1.6m, outstripping 6 Music by more than 300,000. Now branded a stand-alone station, 6 Music is down 27,000 on the start of the year but up 80,000 to 1.27m, year on year. - bbc.co.uk

MediaTel: Newsline: Is the Grand Prix deal the shape of things to come at the BBC?

Disgruntled petrol heads were quick to work through the implications that from next year the BBC will be showing only half the schedule of F1 races live with Sky showing the lot. Think how much money could be saved if you just sat Paxman down to do a single interview and ditched the rest. The seven-year Grand Prix deal may be messy and less than ideal but it is the clearest indication so far of what a 20 cut in revenues will mean in reality for the BBC. - mediatel.co.uk

PCTV NanoStick T2 USB TV tuner - reghardware

Review Ten years ago, investing in a PC TV tuner seemed a neat way of watching while you work integrating the gogglebox with laptop or desktop duties. One good reason is that if you're on the move and you miss your telly, then using a dedicated tuner, rather than streaming, isn't going to cost you dearly for mobile data usage. Another plus point is that the Nanostick is a rather rare beast among portable tuners, as it is capabable of receving Freeview HD channels. - reghardware.com

Virgin Media will not be forced to open up its cable broadband ducts for use by other service providers, much to BT's annoyance. Ofcom ruled that there is no need for Virgin Media to offer wholesale access to its cable network, as the firm does not have significant market power SMP. By contrast, the media regulator ordered BT to open up its broadband ducts and poles to other broadband providers in January 2011. - uswitch.com

The regulator found the station deliberately transmitting at several times above its permitted power level, meaning the licence will now expire in July 2012.
