BBC Digital Public Space project

The speech also discussed the ways the BBC is seeking to get the maximum value from its archive and asked the audience 'what good is it to retain this archive it if can't be shared' before describing the 'digital public space' within which the BBC now sees itself as operating as it delivers its services online. As Ralph noted, the digital public space can mean different things to different people. I and a couple of colleagues work on the Digital Public Space project. - bbc.co.uk

Samsung: We'll hook Europeans on our TVs by giving them a 3D channel - Tech Gear News - Betanews

They'll let you watch Avatar at home in all its epic Cameron-esque glory. The 3D device/platform is there, from the likes of Samsung or Sony but where's the content where you really need it -- in the living room during prime time So it's not surprising that television set manufacturers are doing everything they can to whet our appetites for 3D TV. - betanews.com

However, it clarified its proposals, explaining that the new area would be similar to the 800-999 region used by consumer electronics manufacturers, rather than the release of individual channel numbers. EBU sets out connected TV principals - Broadband TV News

The Geneva-based organisation says that if applied, the principles could deliver lower costs, greater choice and a better viewing experience for consumers and called on its stakeholders to support and respect them. In addition, content must be easily accessible and displayed as the broadcaster intended. The EBU argues that simply putting a television receiver and an internet browser in the same device fails to take advantage of the opportunities to integrate linear and non-linear delivery. Standardised technology encourages more competition between suppliers, lower costs and more choice for consumers. - broadbandtvnews.com

EBU adopts 'Principles for Internet-Connected and Hybrid Television'

The EBU believes that new hybrid systems will only deliver their full potential if they use technology that is harmonized across Europe and allows broadcasters and other content providers to link broadcast and on-demand content such as catch-up TV. The principles also forbid the overlay of third-party content or commercial communications on the television picture without the broadcaster's consent and specifiy that viewers must be abel to return to the last watched channel and have the ability to store favourites and personalised content on their TV. Stephen Glover: Cut the World Service and it's Britain we harm

We are all in favour of the BBC World Service but do we really care I ask because there is little more than a whimper of national protest at the Coalition Government's plans to cut the World Service's budget by 16 per cent as part of its spending review. YouView mandates Linux, HD content encryption - reghardware

In short, the spec is intended to make it hard for ordinary folk to extract HD recordings to store and play them elsewhere. How well this will work in practice is impossible to say - Linux hackers have a history of successfully circumventing such limits. Having an open source foundation may help, but there's a lot more to the YouView device software stack then the Linux kernel, much of it proprietary. - reghardware.com

BBC s World Service income should be ring-fenced - TV Radio, Media - The Independent

The Foreign Affairs Select Committee began an inquiry into the 79-year-old service after jobs and services were cut following Foreign Office funding cuts. The Government has reduced the World Service's 237 million-a-year budget by 16 per cent and ordered the BBC to fund the service from the licence fee from 2014. It estimated more than 30 million listeners would be affected, a sixth of the service's global audience, and the changes would lead to the loss of 650 jobs from a workforce of 2,400. - independent.co.uk

What will we do with 600MHz? - The Register

4G licences are getting all the attention these days, but the switch to digital released another big chunk of radio spectrum which no one seems to know what to do with. With no national broadcasters interested, the government has high hopes for community TV stations, operating along the lines of Community Radio local television for local people, run on a not-for-profit basis for the good of the community. It's very questionable whether there's enough quality content to make such a project viable, and the government has told Ofcom it doesn't want 600MHz reserved for broadcast TV, so what else could we use it for - theregister.co.uk
