Channel 4 to join YouTube and add music channel to
Channel 4 is to team up with the commercial Emap radio (and magazine) group to produce a new Freeview music channel to replace one of the groups +1 channels. So either Film4+1 will become 4Music or E4+1 will become Music4.
The channel will be aimed at the hardly-underserved 16-34 demographic, the best way to ensure advertiser income. However, the service will use the gifted multiplexes space that Channel 4 has been provided to supply public service broadcasting, and so the service will have to be innovative and provide a public service.
Channel 4 said that they " already broadcasts more music programming than any other terrestrial broadcaster, and we are actively developing a cross-music strategy to maintain and build our relevance to young audiences in a digital world. In doing this we are in constant dialogue with a number of potential partners in the music industry including record labels, radio companies, music publishers and other digital music providers."
