Freeview intermittent interference
There are several different types of interference that cause problems. This page deals with the situation where:
- Freeview reception is perfect or near-perfect most of the time
- The audio on TV and radio channels mutes momentarily a few times each minute
- The picture on a Freeview channel freezes a few times each minute
There are two main causes of this type of intermittent interference:
- 'Induction' interference
- Mobile phone interference
Induction interference
Induction interference is caused by mains-powered household devices that contain a large motor, such as:- Washing machine;
- Tumble dryer;
- Central heating pump or combination boiler;
- Fridge;
- Freezer;
- Power tools (drills, jigsaws etc)
- Vacuum cleaners;
- Water pumps;
- Automatic doors
You can identify if one or more of these devices is causing the Freeview reception problem by powering off the devices.
If one of these devices is causing the problem, then the reception problem can usually be solved by using a mains filter device and use it on the Freeview boxes mains connection.
Such as device is this: Maplin: 6-Way Flat Screen and HDTV Surge Protector and Mains Filter.
Mobile phone interference
If you keep a mobile phone by your Freeview box or digital television, keep it further away!This also applies to other transmitters such as baby monitors, video senders, walkie talkies, and portable phones.

I receive my signal from the Sandy Heath transmitter and for the past few months I have had an intermittent problem with my Freeview signal. The problem is becoming more and more frequent now with "NO SIGNAL" messages nearly every night now. My post code is IP27 9AQ and according to our local Facebook page I am not the only person with this problem in the village.
Please could you help as this is getting very frustrating and annoying now. We never had this problem with the analogue signal!

THe current hogh pressure across much of the UK is the cause of your p[roblems. It is a well known and perfectly natural phenomenon and all yopu can do is pwait patiently until the weather pattern changes. Do not retune.

We had a New TV and also had a New aerial put up 4 weeks ago and every thing worked very well until the you changed the signal now it goes fuzzy and breaks up every now and then and screen goes blank for about 5 seconds and then is OK for a while until about anothe hour or two then does it again, i would phone the chap who fitted the areial as i do not think its his fault i might have to pay him again when its not his fault.

Terry: This website has no connection with the company who operate the transmitters or any broadcaster. To offer any advice we need to know which transmitter you're using, so please provide a full postcode so that we can see which transmitters are available at your location, where you are in relation to them and your predicted coverage etc.

Terry: We are having exactly the same problem after changes to Beacon Hill transmitter in Torbay. Have tried all the suggested changes including filters ,attenuators etc but still the same. Next stop Ofcom.

Before you do that check what channels are tuned in so you know which multiplexes are tuned to and that they are the correct ones for your best transmitter. Check that by putting your post code into the Digital UK Coverage Checker at Digital UK - Coverage checker and selecting the Detailed View option.
Also check what the reported signal strengths are for all the multiplexes, the ideal is between 60% and 85% (less or more in know to cause probklems with some equipments).
