All about Freesat

FREESAT LAUNCHED AT 12:30pm ON 6TH MAY 2008 - UPDATE - read about it here - Freesat Launch: brilliant for everyone - ukfree.tv
Freesat is a joint venture between the BBC and ITV plc to provide a consumer-orientated free-to-air satellite reception service. Freesat does not provide any television or radio channels itself; instead it markets the channels and receiver equipment and co-ordinates the provision on an electronic programme guide.
Is Freesat linked to Freeview?
One of the conditions of the BBC Trust approving Freesat was that there must be no linkage between Freeview (which markets digital television though and rooftop aerial) and Freesat. BBC Trust - "Freesat" closed consultationIs this a new service?
Only partially. When direct-to-home satellite services launched in Europe, they were all free. Over time some of these services became subscription, enforced by encryption systems that rendered the signals unwatchable without an appropriate decoder box and subscription card.
When, in 1998, the digital satellite services started, many of the formally free to air channels became subscription services. This originally included those from the BBC and ITV, who mistakenly believed they had to encrypt. However, many channels realised that they did not need to pay Sky Subscriber Services Ltd (SSSL) to simply appear on the Sky Digital Electronic Programme Guide (EPG).

The Office of Fair Trading ( OFT), part of the British Government has always required Sky to provide a free-to-air alternative, and this is known as Freesat From Sky ( fSfS). The OFT understood that SSSL was positioning itself as a gatekeeper to the whole of digital satellite television, and fSfS was required as a market intervention because Sky dominates the pay television market.
Sky has blown hot and cold over fSfS since 1999. At some points it has been happy to market the scheme, at others it has almost hidden it away. Today, the majority of those using fSfS (around a million homes) do so because they have let their Sky subscriptions lapse. When the BBC withdrew from using SSSL encoding during 200X, Sky took the opportunity to cancel all the fSfS cards, and provided messages to the users that erroneously informed them that they had to subscribe once more to continue with their satellite television.
The idea of a BBC Freesat service has been floated for many years. It has always been known that there are going to be a proportion of homes in the UK where terrestrial digital reception will be over-expensive or have limited reception, even after digital switch-over is complete. In addition there are some people who do not wish to have a service, even a free one provided by a News Corporation company, often because of antipathy towards the American owner, Rupert Murdoch.
Since 1998, all UK direct-to-home satellite television broadcasts have used satellites in the 28.2 degrees East orbital position the satellites are in geostationary orbit (they appear stationary from the ground) above the equator 35,786 km over Democratic Republic of Congo (shown on the map below).
There are now five satellites: four belong to SES Astra, a Luxembourg company; the other belongs to the HotBird consortium. Each satellite has a number of different transmitters (known as transponders) which these companies hire out on long-term contracts. Four of the satellites can easily be viewed from most of Northern Europe with a small (60cm) satellite dish, the other has a reception area (called a footprint) focused on the British Isles.
The transponders are listed here. You can see that many have been restricted to Sky subscribers, but many are free-to-air.

Freesat is intended for UK reception, however the signals do cover a larger area, due to the nature of satellite transmission. Please click on the 'footprint' maps for more details.

How much will it cost?
Argos - www.argos.co.uk is already listing a number of boxes, such as those shown below. The installation charge (including dish) is listed as 80 - and their 'installers will call within 48 hours to arrange a convenient date for set up and installation of your Freesat equipment and satellite dish.' - also they say to 'refer to leaflet inside Freesat digital box for more information', see Buy Single Freesat Installation. at Argos.co.uk
Argos are currently showing a 50 and 70 SD box, and a 120 and 150 HD box. All models have 'LAN port for connection to broadband, for faster return path when accessing Freesat digital interactive services.'

Other stores are available.
Do I need a card or to plug the box into a telephone line?
No, and no. But you CAN connect some boxes to your internet router to access additional material online. Access to the BBC iPlayer will start shortly on Freesat..
Will the picture quality be better than Freeview?
Yes, if you have a HD box and connect it to your television using a HDMI connector. See HD and Freesat questions and answers - ukfree.tv for more information. What about the Interactive channels and text service?
The text services on Freesat are in high definition, and are more modern than found on other systems. Will I be able to use a Personal Video Recorder?
Of course, and you will not have to pay a monthly subscription, as is the case with Sky+. They will be in the shops very soon. How does it connect to my television

A HDMI lead is used to connect your HD box to the HDTV. And note, please do not be fooled into buying an over-priced one, it is a digital connection and will work, or not.

A SCART cable is used for SD reception and for connection to 'leagacy' equipment such as a DVD burner.
For more information see: Connecting it all up - ukfree.tv
Can I share a dish?
Yes, but you need a quad- LNB. For more information see: Freesat reception - all about dishes - ukfree.tvWill there be an electronic programme guide (EPG)
The Freesat EPG is independent from the one provided by Sky and includes listings for the radio stations, as with Freeview. What about subtitles and audio description
Subtitles: yes. Audio description: ensure you have a compatible box.Can I just plug a Freeview box into a dish?
No. They are incompatible - do not attempt it, you risk damaging the equipment or getting an electric shock.Anything missing? Let us know, below...

Dear Brian
I have a Technomate satalleite installation. Can it be tuned to get FreeSat and will this include the standard freeview channels - BBC, ITV, Channel 4, 5, 5USA, etc.. or do I have to purchase a freeview box.
Can you advise on Satelitte name and transponder frequencies.
In addition will I be able to use the iPlayer facilities on Freeview boxes - or is this only available by Satellite or Cable networks.
I'm about to terminate services provided by Virgin Media - which means I lose the Freeview they provide.

Richard - Your Technomate can be tuned to most of these, excepting where there are subscription contracts with SKY and in some cases where some channels are included on "Freeview" but as yet not on "Freesat" 5+ and hopefully 5USA should be on "Freesat" by Christmas. Seems like Channel 5 are giving a shake up in their Links with SKY with channel 5 News provision moving from SKY to ITN. An EPG upgrade for Technomate receivers is downloadable from the manufacturer that gives a full 7day EPG. You should check it's compatible with your model before acquiring and installing.

I have a Sony tv with built in free sat and connected to s separate freest dish . I am not able to see any thing via freest - I get a no signal message. However , if I switch to digital I am able to see a limited range of channels. I live in WALMLEY , which is not far away from the Sutton Coldfield transmitter. Is this a problem with my freest dish or my tv . Thanks for any help.

jb383:56 PM
Manickam: Further to what said, when you say you get a limited range of channels what type of Freeview aerial are you using? as although you might well be that close to the mast that you could be partially screened by something know as an umbrella effect, but should you not be, then you would probably get away with using a set top aerial due to your proximity to the transmitter, albeit though that in normal circumstances I wouldn't normally suggest this type of aerial being used for Freeview, however if on the other hand your aerial is on the roof then you have to be cautious as you are very likely to suffer from partial blocking of your Freeview tuners input through it being grossly overloaded with an excessive signal level, which if in evidence can result in many channels being missing.

Richard Caine: A Freesat box cannot do that anymore than a Sky box can either, albeit that a Sky box has an RF modulator than can feed an analogue signal "of the programme being viewed" to analogue TV in another room, a Freesat box does not have this facility.

barry osborne: A Freesat device as the name would suggest uses a satellite dish for reception, and so if you are meaning using a cable intended for Freesat for purposes of feeding it into a digital "Freeview" device then the answer is no, as Freeview requires a normal aerial as its totally incompatible with satellite equipment

Sheila: Yes, as you cannot share a lead from a satellite dish. The other problem is that if you only have a single outlet on your dishes LNB then this will require to be changed to either a dual block or more sensibly a quad version, as the cost difference is absolutely minimal between the two, a quad LNB being around £10.00 or so and taking minutes to fit.
Other than that nothing else requires to be done.

I've had trouble free freesat (from sky?) veiwing for about 5yrs,recent storms snapped off the bracket on my quad lnb so I replaced it.Everything worked fine for a short time, even got ch5 when previously unable to since card expired. Now don't get BBC1 & 2 Scotland (previously on 101 &102 now showing no signal) ch4,ch5,BBC 3 & 4,More 4 + 1 (but do get More 4),ITV2+1,Travel ch +1,Film4 or Film4+1.I adjusted the skew on the LNB to position 3 to no avail.I'm gettimg a stronger signal strength & quality since I changed the LNB.I would have thought that as I get strong signal and results on some channels, the alignment should be OK. So why can't I get local BBC and others?
link to this comment |
J
jb386:07 PM
Paul: If you haven't already done so, I would suggest that you reset the box using the mains plug out for a minute or so method before reconnecting same and letting it go through the usual searching for channels
procedure, as the box might have been carrying out some operation like channel updating when it lost the signal.
If though after doing this they still haven't returned, then use the full reset procedure where you hold in the back up button "on the box" whilst you reconnect the mains supply, only letting go of it when all the boxes LEDs are seen to illuminate, the downloading procedure that follows this action taking up to about 20 mins or so to complete.
I will say though that the signal strength you see indicated on the box is only measured on the default transponder, and so your dish could still be a fraction off, but if its indicating 75% or more (S/Q)) then its unlikely that it is.

Donna: If you are indeed meaning "Freesat" then when you say that you reset the box are you meaning to the point where you had to re-enter the post code, as that instructs the box to pick up the ID code for your particular region.
If though this is what you have been doing, then to test if the actual box has developed a fault or not reset it again and enter B75 5JJ and that result in news etc for the West Midlands area, then reset it again and enter ML7 4NZ and in this case it should give STV Central Scotland, obviously switching the box off after each test to see if it loses the code.

My mother in the north of Ireland (Ulster) wonders if she will continue to receive Irish channels such as RTE1, RTE2, TV3, TG4 once we switch over? She has a TV with built in Freeview and another TV has a Sky box & dish with expired viewing card.
Also, I live in the south (Ulster) and while I want to receive my normal Irish channels, I don't want to lose BBC, UTV and Channel 4! Even if I got those basic channels as I do on terrestrial TV, I'd be happy. I only have a basic TV and not interested in upgrading to HD or a Sky subscription. Saorview in the south (irish Freeview) ONLY offers the 4 irish channels & the box costs 100! Plus you need to get a new aerial.. Any help appreciated, even re mum's situation.

KMJ,Derby9:39 AM
Chris: To start with the easy bit, the digital switchover does not affect the services available on a Sky box. Now for the more technical bits. To receive Saorview transmissions it is necessary to have a receiver that supports MPEG4 signals. A run of the mill standard definition Freeview box will not work. There are a few standard def. boxes such as the BT vision box that will work, but usually you will need to obtain a Freeview HD box when choosing one intended for the UK market. Viewers who rely on the proposed NIMM for reception of RTE etc. will have to have a Freeview HD box as the transmission will use DVB-T2. Viewers who currently receive RTE on analogue will often find that they are served by the full Saorview service after switchover. For those who are not served, a new Saorsat service will provide coverage, but this will require a new box and dish to receive. For reception of BBC, UTV and C4 after switchover you can use any Freeview box, but it might be better at this stage to go for an HD box simply for its advanced technical capabilities.

Very helpful info as no one I asked seemed to know the status quo at all. Cheers :)

this should stop them both looking for the 4/3 option during older programmes ?

Floyd:
If you live in your own house you can have both a TV aerial, as needed for Freeview, and a satellite dish as needed for Freesat. You would need a 'set-top box' fitted to get the Freesat programmes and you can still have the Freeview service as well. Just be careful how you connect the equipment together.

joan brookes: Are you getting your Iplayer via a Freesat box (like a Humax) or through your TV?
The new Humax Freesat boxes should have ITV player (4oD and Five are apparently coming), but the older Foxsat only has Iplayer (as far as I'm aware).
If its through your TV, then only Samsung currently has all four on demand services via TV, blu-ray or PVR. There is a rumour that the Samsung exclusivity might end this month - it thats true, then I'd be surprised is the other brands didn't roll out an app fairly quickly for ITV and the other channels. However, its just a rumour, I've found nothing to confirm it yet.
Obviously You View boxes have all four services, and the Humax T2 just has Iplayer.

I have a rooftop aerial and two leads which come from the outside satellite dish, one which looks like an aerial and the other which screws in to my old sky box - no sky subscription anymore. My t.v. has freeview in it. Can i buy a freesat box and use the satellite aerial and my existing old sky satellite dish to view freesat programmes

Marie: Yes, you can, but you can only watch Freesat, in the same way you you could only watch Sky, because there is only one cable coming from the dish. If you wanted, you could just use the old Sky box

To clarify, the lead(s) from the satellite dish will have the screw-on connectors whilst the terrestrial Freeview aerial will probably have a push-in connector. So, have you got one lead from the satellite dish plus one lead from the rooftop aerial, or do you have two leads from the dish plus one from the aerial? If you had Sky+ then you should have two leads from the dish that were screwed into the back of the Sky box.
You can either use the Sky box to get Freesat, but check with the link MikeB provided and you will not be able to use the Sky box to record. Or you could buy a dedicated FreeSat box. The rooftop aerial lead should go into the aerial socket on the back of your TV set to give Freeview signals.

Wayne If by normal you mean a terrestrial or Freeview recorder then no it wont work on its own. To receive satellite programmes you need a satellite tuner in a recorder, set top box or TV. You can use a Freesat satellite set top box and record programmes on a Freeview recorder connected by Scart lead and using an AV input instead of the internal tuner but you have to set both machines separately. Much better is to get a twin tuner Freesat recorder so you can set recordings from an EPG and watch a second programme at the same time.

Wayne:
Further to what Neil has said, if you want to record Freeview or FreeSat and your receiver has a SCART socket the Freeview or FreeSat receiver may output the selected programme's audio and video via the scart. That can then be fed to the SCART input of your recorder - assuming it has one.
It would help if you told us the make and model of the 'hard drive recorder' you mention as they vary considerably. It would also help if you tell us what Freeview and/or FreeSat receiver you have, then we can look up the relevant technical data.

Wayne: Further to the excellent advice from Neil Bell & MikeP, pretty much the only recorders around that can do this are the DVD/HDD ones from Panasonic (the EX773, EX83, etc), and they are largely being withdrawn - certainly I havn't seen one instore for a while. HD recorders tend not to even have scarts, and even when they do, you cannot vary the input to include scarts.

Annie: If your Sky box is "not" of the Sky+ variety then you will only have one coax lead coming from the dish, therefore is only suitable for use with Freesat receiver box.
If though your Sky box "is" of the Sky+ / Sky+HD variety then you will have two coax cables coming from the dish thereby enabling you to purchase a twin tuner Freesat recorder (PVR) this type of box allowing you to view one programme whilst recording another, or alternatively record two programmes at the same time.
Should you only have one feed coming from the dish and you wish to purchase a Freesat recorder of the type mentioned, then the end piece on the dish where the coax is joined into called the LNB, will have to be changed over to a quad version (twin types no longer supplied) and an additional cable run from same to wherever your box is located.

Annie : In addition to that said, although you will see a range of "FREESAT" boxes advertised in a variety of places I would advise you to think along the line of the more reliable "Humax" brand devices, one I can personally recommend by it being in constant use without fault in my household for the past three years, namely a "Foxsat - HDR / 500 -G", these managers specials offering excellent value for money along with a one years guarantee.

Annie, to back up what jb38 says, I know it's a lot of money, but I have a Humax HDR1010 and it is the best bit of electronic equipment I have ever bought.
It's £249 from Humax FREESAT-HDR1010 White | freesat+ G2 Box 1TB Hard Drive PVR | Richer Sounds .

Annie: You may already have a Freesat/sat tuner hidden in your TV. A lot of older Panasonics had Freesat, and recently its come back into vogue, with higher level Panasonics and mid to high level Samsungs having Freesat tuners. LG's pretty much all seem to have a gerneric sat. tuner from 2013 onwards (although they dont talk about it), and many Sony's are now doing the same. If you have make and model number, we can check. However, just have a look on the back of the set - if its got a screwon fitting like the back of your Sky box, then its got one, and can be used in the same way.
If you want to record and watch - then follow JB38's and Brianists advice - buy something decent - its will seldom be much more expensive that something rubbish, and will be easy to use. Humax is the one I normally recommend. The Humax 1010 is good value at the moment, since at £249, its only £50 more expensive than the 500gb version without wifi - both of those are features which would be worth it for the long term.
If you just want a box to watch (just like your Sky box), customers have given good feedback on this: http://www.johnlewis.com/…1121 - for less than £50 you get Iplayer as well.
Personally, I recommend you take a digital photo of your dish, showing how many connections are currently coming out of it, and go to a proper shop, and ask their advice on buying a box, etc. Humax is the gold standard, but there are others around.
