Freesat on Freeview HD
Freesat, commenting on today's Ofcom announcement that it has awarded two licences for HD channels on Freeview from 2010, Freesat would like you to note that:
- Roll out of Freeview HD channels will be linked to digital switchover, currently taking place in the UK which means that HD will only become available in the UK on a region by region basis from launch until 2012
- In order to view HD channels on Freeview, consumers will need to replace their existing Freeview receiving equipment (either a set top box or a television with a Freeview receiver built in) by purchasing entirely new equipment
- Freeview coverage in the UK currently stands at 73%. Even after digital switchover there will still be a proportion of UK households which will not be able to view Freeview and it's HD channels whilst Freesat reaches 98% of UK homes now
"Due to the way we broadcast our service, via satellite rather than traditional aerial, HD is available now to 98% of UK homes via Freesat. Freesat homes don't have to wait until Digital Switchover reaches their region to get HD for free which for large parts of the country is still over three years off."
And they didn't mention that Freeview HD is limited to 720-line services (2.5 times SD in terms of pixels), whereas Freesat is already 1080-line (5 times SD's pixels).

I've just returned from a 3 week trip and found my BBC HD channels have disappeared from Freesat. I get "no signal" error message on Freesat BBC HD channels 108 and 109.
I can still get HD on Ch126 (4HD) and 209(NHK) and non-HD channels seem fine. I can't get Ch 119 ITV HD because I'm in Scotland and STV are still in the pre HD stone-age, not providing HD, but peevishly blocking it from other ITV regions.
I've got a Panasonic DMR-BS850 Freesat twin tuner HDR, equiv to a Sky HD+ box. I've tried reinstalling the channels and unplugging the HDR box as a reboot, but no improvement.
Any ideas ?

John Chisholm: Heres a bit of a tip, try entering a UK postcode during the initial set up and see if that helps. I played around with my box when I first got it and entered a Scottish postcode and sure enough I received Scottish TV. Give this a go and hopefully you will then get you BBC channels as well as ITV1 HD :-)
Hope this helps!
Kind Regards
Gareth

I'm just buying a Samsung TV with both freeview and freesat tuners incorporated, and will be connecting it to a satellite for freesat service.
I also want to plug in a hard disk drive and DVD player/recorder for recording programmes and occasionally transferring them to DVDs. My existing (five-year-old) one had a freeview tuner built in, and pretty much every model I can see on the web has either a freeview or freesat tuner.
What do I need to get to work with my new TV? If the hard disk has a tuner, how does it relate to the tuner(s) in the TV?
Advice would be welcome!

Duncan Brack: You can't record from the television set, if you want to use a PVR then you will need to supply it with a suitable satellite or terrestrial signal.

Thanks very much for the rapid reply. I'm still confused, however. This is what the Samsung website says:
'Samsungs extended Personal Video Recorder Ready feature makes catching up on your favourite shows convenient and easy. Simply plug in your USB memory and HDD and select the channel, time, and date in the menu and let Personal Video Recorder Ready feature do the rest, allowing you to watch your favourite shows anytime you want.'
Which implies that I don't need any sort of tuner in the recording device. If that's right, what happens if there is a tuner in the device? Does it mess it up?
