Dear Brian Butterworth,

Where has BBC News gone?
It used to be on Astra 2D and it seems to be replaced with BBC Alba. I have tried to get it on Astra 1N 10818MHZ V tp 48 which is I believe is the freesat transponder but I cannot pick up this channel on my Fortec Star satelite box which I have reprogrammed. All other channels appear but not the BBC News Channel !!!!
I have tried to access Astra 1L 11597 V transponder 2b to get BBC world News Europe but Astra 1L is at 19.2 degrees East which I cannot access because of the hills around my small holding in the Peak District (SK110SE).

Very grateful for your advice.

Regards
David

JD Richards/David I'm puzzled. I don't use my Fortec Star Passion + HD much these days but I checked just now and I still have BBC News on 10818 V 22000 and BBC Alba on 10803 H 22000. I can also get BBC World on 19.2 11597 V 22000 and on Hotbird 13.0 12597 V 27500. Mind you we don't have too many hills in London! (sorry!) Neil

Jenny Sky broadcasts via satellites that are 23,000 miles above the equator so you dont get localised reception problems in particular towns. However there must be a clear path between the satellite and your dish and the dish must be aligned precisely. If e.g. there is a tree in the way then that can cause intermittent problems as can a loose mounted dish especially if its windy.

J D Richards. This issue cropped up when 2D was temporarily replaced by 1F and more recently by 1N. It should have corrected if you re-scanned. I am assuming your running a motorized dish on the Fortec receiver and given your locus and reception issues I would try tweaking your system signal and PQ as high s you can. Then try a further re-scan which should correct the issue you are having.

maddy: You are one of many Sky viewers in Spain who have also experienced exactly the same problem since Ch5 was moved to the new Astra 2F satellite at the end of December, the reason for the problem being that the footprint (coverage area) of the 2F satellite favours the whole of the UK and Eire and with it even stretching into the Atlantic Ocean but with this being at the expense of Southern European countries, as the satellites footprint is seen to start tapering off around the Nantes level and with Bordeaux being considered as on the border line for reception, you being a considerable distance South of this.

Of course these footprints are by no means anywhere near to a 100% accurate indication of what's actually possible in a real life situation and reception can generally be achieved outside of the published range, albeit though only by using a really large 3M or more) dish! however I think that it would be somewhat stretching it for anything at all to be received as far South as you might possibly be located. (exact area not known)

That said, its possibly worth a chat to someone who resides more local to yourself and who is observed to be using a sizeable dish, as you cannot really beat a report from someone else in the same boat as yourself, as they say!

sean baker: If you are referring to a Freeview box connected into a "normal" aerial then you would have this connected into your TV via a scart connection, the output from the magic eye being left exactly as it is by going into the TV's aerial socket, then you would select what you want to view by pressing the AV input button on your TV's remote control, this toggling between Freeview and Sky.
