None. In the past if I pressed it the tv would switch between dtv and atv but now it does nothing

r. bedford: If the TV does not respond to pressing this button then that indicates a definite fault in either the remote control (check / replace batteries) or the TV, because pressing that button should offer the choice of either ATV or DTV irrespective of any other settings that may have been made.

r. bedford: Well even if the batteries in the remote control are definitely OK? it could still be the coding side of the control that's defective even although it might still be able to switch the set on and off, does it?, but if you used to be able to change from ATV to DTV by pressing that button, which of course is its purpose!, then a fault has developed in either the control or the receivers IR pick up decoder.

r.bedford: Looking at the long discussion, I would have to say that It is possible for a tuner to go, but I suspect it would normally go altogether. Since the other TV showed a very low signal strength, it looks like you might have got two problems rolled into one.
Unfortunately, the manual for the B450 is not easy to find (or at least download safely), but here is a link to a Samsung factory reset method which was current back in 2009 - give it a go : Performing A Factory Reset
There is also a whole thread here: Lost dtv on my samsung tv | AVForums.com - UK Online
If you get back to DTV, at least your part of the way there.
If your remote is bad, then its about a tenner for another one from ebay, but if you then find out its the tuner/TV anyway, your talking a fair amount for repair - since you can buy a new Samsung 32F5500 (100hz screen, wifi, smart LED) for about £360, you have to decide whether its worth repair, etc.
Could I ask who you bought it from? My customers have a five year warrenty, so if you bought it in 2009....

jb3811:36 PM
r. bedford : On the subject of the apparent inability of the TV's "mode select" facility to respond to the button being pressed on the remote control, if the problem is NOT with the remote control or the TV's IR pick up / decoder circuitry, then it could be associated with a fault in the section of the power supply that's concerned with supplying power to the tuners switching system, if indeed not even the tuners themselves!
Unfortunately I dont have a service manual for that model, only its operating same, and with my first chance to access the manual not being until later on in the week, however irrespective of that the TV or remote is faulty and something that I now suspect has been the whole cause of your problem.
By the way, maybe you could confirm (or not) if the remote is able to switch the TV off and on?

I Have a sky box and satelite dish but a company has put scaffolding up blocking my signal, I have freeview on my TV how can I get that without going through my sky box, I also have aTV with Free sat but I think it is wired into my satelite dish.

jb388:23 PM
Pearl Beesty: If you only have a satellite system installed then unfortunately there is no way around this problem unless the dish is temporarily moved a few inches either way to clear the scaffolding poles.
When scaffolding installers (of the more professional type) know that they are going to obstruct a satellite dish then they will usually try to position the support poles so as to miss the dish, checking with the owner of to ensure all is OK with their reception.
However as you say that your TV has Freeview then dependant on where you reside it "might" work with a set top aerial, or if not by removing the Sky boxes dish feed "F" connector and connecting a wire from the TV's aerial socket to the outer casing of the "F" connector, technically taboo but OK in an emergency situation.
If you supply a post code or one from nearby ,e.g: a shop / post office then this will enable your chances of reception using the aforementioned procedure to be assessed.
By the way, your Freesat TV will also be connected into the dish.

If Freesat signals are reaching your area you will need to pick "Astra2/ 28.2" satellite to scan for them.

You need to do a "Manual Scan" on "Waltham" using number 49 and "Nottingham" on 27.
take note of which of these signals are stronger?

You need to use a coaxial splitter, that has 1 input and 2 or more outputs. The input is fed from the source, you aerial if you are using Freeview and all TVs have built in Freeview reception or the output from you Set Top Box (which could be Freeview, Freesat or Sky) if that is what you use. The outputs should be connected separately to each TV that you want to use.
Be careful not to amplify the signal too much if your current reception is OK, the best splitters are powered to overcome inherent losses but the amplification can cause the signal to be too strong and result in loss of programmes, etc. But if your signal is already very strong, you may (?) get away with an unpowered splitter - but they rarely come in more than 2-way splits. And a cable must be plugged into every outlet and feed into a TV set else it will not work properly (impedance matching demands that).
You don't give either a location post code nor details of the equipment you have so it is difficult to be more specific.

Hi, my brother has recently moved to northeast Italy and would like to receive some UK channels.
The apartment has a dish on the roof, although I am not sure which way it is pointing, and a cable for satellite coming from it into the apartment.
Would a UK freesat box possibly work for our standard channels like BBC / ITV etc.?
Any help would be appreciated.

Dear sir,
I returned India after many years service in the LONDON. I have used BT VISION with broadband facilities. But in India not such system is provided.
Is it possible to use this setup box as only Digital setup box to received Indian channels ?
Kindly help us by Email please.
link to this comment |
S.N.Haldar: One of the things to consider is whether broadcasts use the DVB-T digital signal standard or the later DVB-T2 standard.
In the UK, standard definition broadcasts use DVB-T and high definition broadcasts use DVB-T2. Thus, a "Freeview HD" receiver is capable of receiving DVB-T and DVB-T2 signals. I understand that BT Vision boxes are standard definition only, and therefore only contain DVB-T tuners.
I haven't established for certain whether India uses DVB-T2 exclusively, but if the area you're going to has signals that are, the BT Vision box won't pick them up.

I asked a silly question by typing Freeview when I meant Freesat,
If I buy a new, smaller, flat screen set labelled "Freeview tuning" will it work on Freesat when connected to a Freesat box and my Freesat dish? I cannot find any small tvs in the shops or online which are Freesat enabled. My dish has leads to three rooms and a simple SD box in each. Nobody can answer this so far. Up to now I had sets which did not specify any sort of tuning.

Alison Fairgrieve: The question was answered by MikeB:
Can I use an existing sky dish with a freeview box? and if so can the two services share the same dish? | ukfree.tv - 11 years of independent, free digital TV advice
Having read your follow-up posting here, I would say that the reference to "Freeview" in the earlier posting was correct.
The answer to your question is "yes".
As MikeB said, you would be using the TV as a monitor, i.e. to view what is fed into it from the Freesat box via a HDMI lead or scart lead. The fact that it has capability to receive Freeview is immaterial as that part of it would be left unused.

MikeB1:03 PM
Alison Fairgrieve: yes, any tv can be connected to a freesat box (by hdmi if you want HD) - its just the same as using a digibox.
You won't find freesat in most tv's - freeview HD is pretty much standard, and obviously a tuner that few people use is an extra cost - you'll find them at the mid high level 40-42in plus. The only 32 tv that do have freesat are the Samsung 6500 & 6800 - a good mid level tv with 400hz screens - around £550. Since a freesat tuner is about £60 for a cheap one, its easier getting the tv, and getting this as well, unless you want a better picture anyway.
However, the excellent 100hz 32in LG N575 does have a sat. Tuner! LG will not talk about it, but they do have one, and although its generic rather that freesat, a look around the web shows it is useable, although the epg will not be the same.
Since the 575 and the lg 620 are good value in 32 anyway, they might be worth a look. If they work, great, if not then just get a freesat box as well.
A word of advice from someone who is paid to advise people about tv's- find the right size. 1.5m away from a 32 is fine, and ten feet for a 40/42in (37s are no longer made) once you have the right size, everything else is easy. Pretty much all of the four major brands tv's will have freeview HD, be smart and have wifi, and are cheaper than ever before.
However, a freesat box (humax sell graded ones at decent prices) should be fine with any existing or future tv.

jb389:35 PM
Jim danielsen: Does the problem vanish by removing the TV's aerial input lead? and is anything else connected into the TV apart from the Sky box?
Another point being, is the Sky box connected into the TV via an HDMI cable or alternatively a scart lead? because if the former remove one end and make a one turn coil in the cable before reconnecting it again, if the problem is still visible then grasp the coil tightly in your hand and see if this changes anything.
If though you are using a scart coupling then try reversing the cable, i.e: TV end swapped over to the box end and vice versa.
The other point I wondered about is whether or not you are connected into a communal dish / aerial system, because strange problems can sometimes crop up in the multi switch distribution amplifier systems used for this purpose.

Anna: Your less than 7km from Winter Hill (which as reported no problems), so you should get excellent reception (possibly too good). Check signal levels, and which transmitter your tuned into. Also check any cables - are they loose, broken, etc
link to this comment |
Anna: If this happened when you put your box into standby then perhaps it is because it doesn't have enough memory to store the channels. The fact that it is ITV/C4/C5 etc, which is found last during the scan, could perhaps mean this is a possibility.
See here for an explanation I gave to someone else the other day (also on Winter Hill):
Most popular questions | ukfree.tv - 11 years of independent, free digital TV advice
The point is that it hasn't (if indeed this is problem) run out of memory because it can't handle all the channels from Winter Hill but because there are other channels its picked up from other transmitters. You need to prevent it from picking up some of those others so as to have room for what you want it to store. It's a bit like not eating too much before lunch and then not having enough room for the main meal.

Anna: Your follow-up posting means that what I suggested in my posting at 10:17pm isn't the issue.
I am not sure what else to suggest; maybe others can chip in.
I do note, however, that there are mobile phone base stations 1km away to your west, which is the direction your aerial is facing. The other fact is that ITV/C4/C5 from Winter Hill is on the highest channel which is just below any 4G signal operating in the 800MHz band.
That said, the signal from Winter Hill would be expected to be strong, which counters to some degree any likely interference. In any case, 1km is quite a distance, I would have thought (although I'm not the expert in radio signals).
Maybe if you have an amplifier (booster), particularly to split the aerial feed to more than one room, this could be affected.

jb389:17 AM
Anna : As you would appear to be located in a relatively well spaced out area you "might" be able to receive a reasonably good signal from Winter Hill (@ 4 miles) on a set top aerial "if"you can manage to access same, if not then a short length of wire (about 6 feet or so) connected into the boxes aerial socket (middle cup of) might also be suffice for a test.
The best way to conduct a test like this is to leave the box sitting on the BBC "before" removing the aerial connection and replacing it with one of the test alternatives suggested, this being done simply to ensure that you can actually receive it on whatever alternative you choose, and although the picture obtained (if any!) might not be particularly stable this doesn't really matter as the whole purpose of the exercise is to find out if ITV vanishes whilst using it.
By the way when ITV1 vanishes is ITV3 affected in any way? the reason I enquire is that its on the next mux channel down from ITV1.

jb3812:57 PM
Anna: As far as a test with a set top aerial is concerned basically yes, as its about the only way of being able to point the finger in a positive way at the aerial as being the likely cause of your problem.
However, as you have now confirmed that ITV3 is also lost then although a defective connection on the aerial could still be responsible it "might" also point to the possibility of the receiver being swamped by a 4G transmitter being tested in your area, as some receivers are far more susceptible to swamping than others as it all depends on factors concerning the tuner.
Taking this factor into consideration it would then be interesting to know the result if your new box was tested out on your neighbours aerial system, because if anything of a 4G nature is responsible then its likely to show up when the box is connected into another aerial system, that is provided that the aerial in question was located not that terribly far away from your own.
By the way, in areas where 4G might possibly cause problems (with certain tuners) it mainly affects reception of Ch60 / C59 etc and tapering off to a certain extent downwards, this being why I enquired about ITV3 by it being on C58, this then followed by the next down the line being C55 / ITV4 - and so on.
I am not saying that this actually applies, but if it did then that said would be the effect.
link to this comment |
Anna: It's unlikely that a laptop will interfere with the TV reception. You could always try powering down your laptop as that would prove either way.
It may be worth finding out if there is a 4G testing in your area which may interfere with TV reception. The body set-up by the mobile operators and charged with alleviating interference is at800. Give them a ring and explain the issue, giving times of the interference if you have them and they should be able to tell you whether those times coincided with a 4G base station being on the air.
See here for contact details:
Contact at800 / DMSL | General Enquiries | at800
If it appears to be a possible case of 4G interference then they will probably send you a free filter to put on your aerial lead.

Paul Wharton: Use the analogue part of the television to tune in the output from the Sky box. If it doesn't have an analogue tuner then it will not be able to show the output of the Sky box on its own.

Dave Lindsay: where do I find the analogue part ? I haven't seen it
link to this comment |
Paul Wharton:
When you tuned your new tv it would have given you the option to either tune Freeview or both Freeview and analogue.
If you tuned both then I would suggest putting your tv on Freeview BBC1, then press the program down button once, this should take you onto analogue 1 where your sky should have tuned to. This does depend on the make of tv that you have. Some TV's will put the analogue channel onto program number 901.

Paul Wharton: Knowledge of the make and model number may be able to ascertain how the analogue part can be tuned, this being if the user manual can be found online.

Paul Wharton: There is usually a button to switch mode or perhaps the one you use to switch inputs.

A Barnes: Check your signal level - could be too low, but also too high!
Retuning isn't the answer, and might mean that you end up with the wrong transmitter.

john: There are only five frequencies from Sutton Coldfield if you have a standard definition box. Can you change the guide to 8-day Freeview? This is a solution in some cases of lost EPG.

I have also lost my 14 day EPG. The 8-day has gone as well. I have re-booted and re-scanned all to no avail. Any suggestions welcome.

Wendy: I doubt Top UP TV will update the 14 day guide now that they've closed down, so your only option is to stick with the 8 day guide for now and see if it works.

Have a USB DVB-T 'dongle' - and I'm struggling to use it with LINUX. -anyway -
to verify it still works in some capacity, I need to input some data into VLC's capture device -

Hi I have a Top Up TV box that since they have stopped broadcasting has lost it's extended TV Guide and therefore although I can still pause live TV I can't record anything. Does anyone know if it's possible to be able to get a TV guide on there or do I have no choice other than to buy a new Freeview box?

Last week I lost all the program synopsis data. It still showed what program was on each channelbut with no info about the programs. Also it only showedthe programs for the next three days. Now it has lost the program data completely. I have no idea what can have happened. I can still watch all channels but as there is no program data I cannot record anything. Any ideas please?

Wendy update to my problem I changed the setting on the Freeview number of days listing from 14 to 8 days. I then got the program information displayed. Maybe my digihome box
is getting a little tired.

Dawn, Sue, Christine: This issue has affected Top Up TV users and the solution is to change the setting from 14 day EPG (electronic programme guide) to 8 day EPG.

hello,
for the last month i have been successfully using my mum's old sky+ box and white viewing card to watch and record free channels without a subscription! (she got a new hd box and card). However the other night it suddenly stopped working and said 'no signal'. I couldn't figure if sky has sent the "kill record" signal and it has hit home, although I thought I would be able to still watch free channels if so? I've tried all the unplugging/ resetting etc. I know it's not my dish as my sisters old box works to view (not record). Is it simply that the old box has kicked the bucket? thank you!

cate:
You was very lucky to be able to record using a box that's not on an account.
That must have been a clitch in your favour.
STB's that are not on account should only let you view minimal channels and definitely not record.
regards
Jamie.

cate: hello, thanks for your posts. I think it was a fluke it was working - noone could believe it! I can only think that the box has now packed it in as it will not let me watch anything at all now. but good idea, I could try plugging it in at my sister's house.
i know my dish is ok as I am using a replacement box at the moment. Just sad my planner has gone! :(

Phone sky and subscribe to a package where they will then arrange a time with you to complete an installation.

My dad is in a residential home . We got him a new t v . It keeps going off with ' Please check your aerial connection'. The aerial man has been and says its ok. It can be on for days and then just go off mid program. And then you sit and re tune loads of times and it suddenly tunes in. Before I ask them to check aerial yet again could it be the fault of the t v. ?
