Without knowing what Peter's 'box' is it could be highly dangerous to just wrench it off its mounting and if they try shorting whatever mains connections there may be they could be seriously burnt or maimed - DON'T DO IT!
It would be better and safer for all to ask the local Council, BT or Electricity undertaking if they have any record of it and whether it is still needed. There are many things it could be so please ask first.
Oeter - is it on your property? If not, don't touch. If it is, ask first.

I set up my brand new goodmans freeview box yesterday as soon as i received it. It worked fine all evening. This morning it wouldn't turn on. I tried new batteries in the remote, turning it off and dismantling everything, then putting it back together, tried a different socket but it still wont turn on. It,s almost as though the remote doesn,t connect with the box. Any ideas?

jayne: The only thing that might be happening is that the power supply has come loose from the back of the box (which does happen), or that the fuse has gone (which is unlikely).
If the box has a red light on it, then it is getting power, but its in standby. You've changed the batteries on the remote, but you can check if the remote is working by pointing it at a digital camera (the one on a phone is fine) and pressing a button. If there is a little flash on the picture, then the remote is working. If not (and batteries even come with the thing, and its only a couple of days old), then the remote is gone.
Try to make sure the power is plugged in properly. If it is, and still no joy, take it back and get it replaced. Frankly, they are not great (I've got one!), but they should work.

My best guess is that your dish is not pointing correctly so that tiny changes take it in and out of getting a usable signal.

A post code (or of a nearby shop) will help us locate where you are and which transmitter you might get Freeview from. We can also check whether the windmills are between you and the transmitter.
