Further to my last mail re.the 3 new HD channels. I have found a site-www.visiontvnetwork.co.uk If you look it up and also the many links,it seems to be something to do with IPTV.Also that one has to have tv with HD tuner and with a broadband connection.(I have Samsung UE40D8000) There is nothing on the other 2 channels (Connect and Stream).

hi, i jus recently bought a baeur dur23641f. The book said it needed a signal strength of 80%+
so i bought a nikkai wideband amplifier and the signal boosted to 91%(no signal before)
the problem is it doesnt pick up any quality.

Iv used a coax cable without an aerial and it doesnt work either. This method works for my brother who has a sony aquos. He just points it out the window and gets loads of channels, plus his wires damaged! My coax does work on his.
I tried auto and manual dtv scans but nothing comes up. I should be able to recieve the channels in my area

Dear Brian,

I am associated with the campaign to bring local TV to Cities and Towns around the UK, and have been associated with the campaign for local TV for many years. I was, for a time, involved in the original analogue local TV services for Portsmouth and Southampton. So, yes, I do remember the bad old days.

Now, the government has created a major opportunity to make this long term ambition a reality, and the most recent DCMS discussion document on the subject has seen a significant improvement in many of the policies - including a guarantee of a high place on the EPG.

However, the one outstanding issue which concerns me is the issue of transmission - which is why I have finished up on your site. The government still seems committed to a top down approach, with a national MUXCO owning and administering all the frequencies and all the transmission.

Given the movement towards a bottom up aproach it seems entirely counter intuitive to stick to this one element of the Top Down model.

Your site helpfully highlights that at most transmitter locations, Ofcom has already identified frequencies which are available for local TV, and many of the local TV campaigners believe that with a real political will, even more could be found for more specifically focussed local TV. But we believe at the heart of that lies the principle that the local TV consortia, whatever form they take, should have ownership and control of their own means of production AND TRANSMISSION.

The government has a consultation process on its latest paper and this closes on September 23rd, and we are looking for support from all quarters to support a lobby to give far greater freedom and flexibility to local groups to make their own arrangements - not least because TV transmission, though a lot more complicated than radio - is not rocket science, and to continue the space analogy, does not have to cost the same as a lunar probe. Indeed, my very specific experience is that it can cost substantially less the conventional approach.

I've tried to find an e-mail for you, but have so far failed, but would be delighted to hear more from you and your followers - and above all enlist your support in this current campaign, because this is technical, and not political issue, and thus far I suspect that Jeremy Hunt has been blinded by science.

Yours,

Steve Harris

Steve Harris: Thanks very much for your post.

I did put the government consulation document, which is a PDF located at http://www.culture.gov.uk/images/consultations/Local-TV-Framework_July2011.pdf in the Newsbucket on Monday afternoon.

I was intending to go though it and write it up in the Local television - ukfree.tv section of UK Free TV.

There is also some coverage in that section of the available Freeview "interleaved" frequencies for local television on the Interleaved Frequencies maps - ukfree.tv - independent free digital TV advice.

To answer your question about the ownership of the multiplexes, rather than the actual local TV channels, I think the proposal is that MUXCO is a not-for-profit company that is backed by the BBC money.

This might be a reasonable idea, in so much as a single national not-for-profit company would have the "economies of scale" and access to Arqiva that lots of little companies would not have. If you already own the sites and equipment, as Arqiva do for the whole of the DTT network, adding in these extra local TV services would be much more cost effective, than having a multitude of local MUXCOs that would have to negotiate with Arqiva.

Personally I can't see the local TV system working without at least a few of the C31-C37 "DDR" frequencies being provided for local TV for those areas where the interleaved frequencies do not provide sufficient coverage.

Hi,
I live in Toronto, Canada. I have a satellite connection in my home, I have an extra satellite receiver (Viewsat). I need to know if I could use this receiver to function as a good old cable TV box to connect to the TV in the basement.
Thanks.
