Digital switch-over problems

There are now a number of issues related to digital switchover (DSO) in the UK.

The Sutton Coldfield transmitter that serves Birmingham is having all the current analogue and digital services moved to a second temporary mast. This work was due to be completed last month, but the bad weather has not allowed the "air work" to be completed quickly.

With the power level reported to be about an eighth of normal, this has caused many people reception problems in second largest city in England.

Despite being close to the first digital switch-over in Whitehaven, it seems that people using the Bleach Green transmitter are unable to scan for Freeview services. However, they do work if the viewer manually tunes their box toC53, C57 and C60. "Digital UK says they are now working with Ofcom and the broadcasters to fix the problem".

Down in Cornwall, the Redruth transmitter is stuck in limbo. Cornish people can now watch digital TV from the transmitter and relays, but the commerical multiplexes are on the old power levels and old frequencies until 30 September 2009.

It would appear that the 30 September Freeview retune will be an important date nationwide.

BOB: Your SONY SLV-D980P GI can only be used to record via its scart sockets now, needless to say there is no need to connect your aerial into it as the tuner is now in effect redundant as far as digital signals are concerned and there is nothing that can be done to alter this situation.

However the only qualification to what's said being if you use the Sony's RF modulator to send a signal into another rooms "analogue" TV, or to a TV in another room that is dual standard, (analogue / digital) then the aerial can be used as normal to pass the Freeview signal through the Sony to the second TV, the TV concerned being switched to analogue to view any recording made, otherwise left on digital for Freeview reception.

I have a Pioneer DBR-T210GBS Freeview box. It's one of the original ITV boxes.

I need to re-tune it as since the switchover it hasn't worked, but am unable to find how to do it.

If anyone has any suggestions I'd be very grateful. Perhaps I should just bin it and start again.

steveh: That box cannot operate on the newer 8k transmission standards and unfortunately there is nothing that can be done to rectify the situation.

In other words, a new box is really called for.

In recent days, the picture disappears although the sound still comes through. Is it the transmitter or my set/setup?

I live at NG26ES

caroline: I am not quite sure what you mean when you say "turn over", are you meaning when changing channels?

Also what model of Philips TV are you referring to? as "HD ready" in most TV's does not mean that they can actually receive HD transmissions, but only show an HD image when the said TV is coupled into an HD receiver via its HDMI socket.
