published on UK Free TV

BBC's DAB digital radio services started today from a new transmitter at Carnmoney Hill.

The new transmitter provides digital radio coverage to the north of Belfast, and improves coverage throughout the city.

Another 34,000 people now have DAB services, and 350,000 people also have improved coverage (one in five of Northern Ireland's population).

This completes the BBC DAB network in Northern Ireland (aside from two transmitters planned for 2011).

Ivan: The other channels are on the 12D local multiplex. They may not be available in your area yet.

The "Bauer N. Ireland" multiplex is broadcast from the Black Mountain, Limavady, Brougher Mountain, Strabane, Derry and Colinward transmitters only.

Ivan: I'm in Jordanstown and can also see the crnmoney hill transmitter from my bedroom window. I receive all the DAB stations that are available here.

Where abouts is your location ? I get excellent reception from Carnmoney Hill and a good signal from Colinward mountain (near Ballyclare)

If it's a small HiFi system you have, you may find the aerial is a little wire at the back. Not really a satifactory solution at all. Telescopic whips are much better.

Check to see if there's some sort of external aerial socket. Even one of the indoor ribbon type dipoles will be much better.

I did not think you would need it as 12D is transmitted from Colinward. Expansion of the commerical network is badly needed but very uncertain at the moment.

With a decent aerial Ivan, you should get something from either Colinward or Black Mountain.

Hi Peter,

My problem is I live on the Doagh Road opposite the playing fields and I am obstructed by Carmoney Hill and I have not got a clear view of Black Mountain or Colinward.

Know exactly where you are Ivan (I'm not too far away on the Jordanstown Road).

You should be getting an excellent signal now from the BBC multiplex. I would also have thought you'ld get something from Colinward Mountain, as I'm sure the last time I had the Pure Highway in the car the commercial multiplex was coming in fine all the way down the Dough Road (From the Monkstown Road junction).

I'll try it again over the next few days and let you know how I get on. Those little wire aerials are absolutely crap when it comes to DAB reception. The telescopic antennas are much better.
