Good news for Freesat? Astra 2E satellite launched

Good news from SES , Luxemboug today (September 30, 2013)
The ASTRA 2E satellite blasts into space on board an ILS Proton Breeze M booster last night at 3:38am Baikonur time (23:38 CET and 17:38 EDT on September 29).
After a 9-hour, 12-minute mission, the Breeze M upper stage of the Proton rocket successfully released the ASTRA 2E satellite directly into geostationary transfer orbit, from where ASTRA 2E will be deployed at the 28.2/28.5 degrees orbital arc.
54th SES satellite to be deployed into 28.2/28.5 degrees East orbital arc
The satellite was built for SES by Astrium of France. Based on the highly reliable Eurostar E3000 platform, the spacecraft carries 60 Ku-band transponders, including 12 incremental transponders for delivery of services outside Europe, as well as 4 Ka-band transponders.
It will enable the delivery of next generation broadcast and broadband services in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. ASTRA 2E, which had a launch mass of 6 tonnes, will feature a wingspan of 40m once its solar arrays are deployed in orbit, generating 13 kW of spacecraft power at the end of its 15-year design lifetime.
Romain Bausch, CEO of SES says "We would like to thank Astrium and ILS for the successful ASTRA 2E mission. The 54th satellite in SESâ global fleet provides significant capacity expansion at a strategic orbital neighborhood over Europe. In combination with ASTRA 2F which was launched in September 2012, and the upcoming ASTRA 2G due for launch next year, ASTRA 2E is an important part of our fleet renewal programme at the 28.2/28.5 degrees orbital arc. The state-of-the-art new satellites provide more focused and higher power to our broadcast customers, while the Ka-band on board supports the delivery of next-generation satellite broadband services"-
6:38 PM
Trevor Harris: The satellite has a UK (OK, British Isles) footprint transmitting dish. As far as we know, any transponder's output can be routed to any transmitting dish, it's up to the leaseholder for the transponder to decide whether they want a European footprint, a West African footprint or a UK footprint.
The Astra 1N satellite is still supposed to move to 19.2°E at some point, it was only a stop-gap to cover the early retirement of the 2D satellite. (1N's UK footprint isn't really a UK footprint, it's the best that could be achieved by steering one of its dishes - designed for some other purpose.)
You're right that "Freesat" doesn't lease any transponders itself. They would probably benefit from being a broker to allow channels to launch without having to lease a whole transponder from SES - as Sky do. But Freesat is a marketing joint venture between the BBC and ITV plc, and doesn't have much capital of its own.
I note that Arqiva have now signed a deal with SES for a lease on multiple transponders:
SES AND ARQIVA SIGN CAPACITY AGREEMENT FOR THE UK MARKET - SES.com
. I think it's likely that Arqiva will use this to supplement their large investment in Freeview - offering FTA satellite coverage to the channels they already carry on Freeview - and as a hedge against the government deciding to switch off large chunks of Freeview spectrum.

Personally, I'm not sure the extra channels on the Sky package are anything to get excited about ('Holiday & Cruise'?), and your paying £25 if you've still using Sky equipment, and £175 as a one off if you dont (and £50 if you move).
I cant see if you can record, but if they charge you a tenner a month for that as well, your talking £150 pa. You can buy a cheap Freesat PVR for that.

FYI...
SES AND EUTELSAT UPDATE ON OPERATIONS AT 28.5° EAST - SES.com
Luxembourg, Paris, 4 October 2013 - Following the decision of the Arbitral Tribunal constituted under the rules of the International Chamber of Commerce of Paris that concluded the first phase of arbitration in September 2013 and a preliminary injunction by the regional civil court of Bonn, SES (NYSE Euronext Paris and Luxembourg Stock Exchange: SESG) and Eutelsat Communications (NYSE Euronext Paris: ETL) have collaborated in the best interest of customers to ensure a smooth transition of operations on frequencies at 28.5°E under a German filing.
As of October 4, SES is operating and Eutelsat has ceased operating on these frequencies. The transfer was successfully completed in the night of 3-4 October. SES and Eutelsat are in discussions to find a solution regarding the subject matter of the arbitration. -

Mike B the sales man say on Sky box as freesat from sky.. has 240 channels free.. while freesat has 150 channels... i am not getting subcripton at all... freesat recorder boxes are over £150... i want brand new... wont have 2nd hand coz i had problems with 2nd user boxes.... plus £120 to install new dish and cables.... that makes freesat set up very expensive around £340 pounds to pay up front.

rob: you've brought up a number of points:
1) the 'salesman' says there are 90 more channels on freesat for sky than on freesat - yes, but are you going to watch any of them? Remember, he's a salesman for Sky - who are ultimately hoping you'll go bank to sky anyway...
2) your getting no subscription - you kind of are. As far as I'm aware (and I did try to check it out) freesat for sky gives you more channels, but you cannot record them on your existing sky box without paying for that function(if someone does know, please tell). Since that's over £10 a month, your paying £120 a year to record - which makes £150 for a freesat recorder look attractive, as I originally pointed out.
3) if you have a sky dish, why do you need to buy a new one? They will leave the dish, and if it has two lnbs, it's a straight swap. This is covered in the modt frequently asked questions - it's the most popular question!
Look at the long term costs, and find out the facts.

Mike B my dish is very old was up there since 1999 the LNB is knackered and the dish is very rusty
and i cant get up there due to my disability due to car accident.... i feel freesat set up is NOT £150... its more than that in shops plue £120 install fee

rob: No matter how old or rusty your dish might be provided that it hasnt been moved then all you require is the LNB replaced with a quad version (twin types no longer manufactured) and a second cable run from the new LNB to a Freesat PVR, the undermentioned link being to a grade "A" model manufactured by one of the most reliable brands around.
By the way, a complete quad kit only costs around £10.00 or so from a number of e-bay outlets, although obviously someone would have to install same for you.

Just checked on Amazon UK and a freesat box is from £65 and a Freesat PVR (recorder) is from £150.
As you already have a dish pointing in the correct direction all you need is a change of LNB, as jb38 states.
Setting up the box is easy once you have read the manual.

Thanks folks. Jb38.. I like to ask you opinion on sat tv cable.. Now for PVR is it best to use single cable for each feed or use. twin shot gun cable..... i am abit wary of twin cables as they are very thin.. ok it looks nice but......whats the quality difference between twin and nice thick single cable?
debate??

rob: Standard twin coax of the type referred to can indeed result in a slight signal loss even if the cable run is relatively short of say around 5m or so, therefore when taking appearance into account along with performance I would use a high quality version such as Webro WF65CU as this type is suitable for a wide variety of situations.
Cable referred to can be seen by opening the undermentioned link.

I dont care what the neighbours think... its my house my dish but i will do it in a tidy professional way.. just have to wait till my foot is fully recovered then i be brave enough to go up 3 story house to my dish.... might ask a mate at BT to "borrow a cherry picker" that be saver option

rob: Well, working on top of an extension ladder tall enough to reach the level of a three story house is certainly "not" for the faint hearted, but with regards to your latter comment, either that or be fortunate enough to have a street lighting maintenance vehicle working in the area and with the driver of being open to persuasion, backed up of course by a suitable bribe!!
Sometimes though its better all round just to "grin and bear it" and pay an installers surcharge for working at an excessive height.

Rob, MikeB- Just a point from reading your replies, Sky will charge for installation if you do not take up subscription.
This may be up to £175 for dish and cable?
Sky will also charge a sale price for a "Skybox" The HD box costing around £299 for a replacement to a Sky subscriber!
Their £65 call out to subscribers will be a reconditioned box, Sky wont be interested in after sales problems for non subscribers.
The extra channels do depend on what you prefer to watch but ALL the channels from Sky will be in the EPG to tempt you.
Overall I believe the cost of Installing either system will not differ to much on the first outlay

Ian from notts: You've hit the nail on the head when it comes to the inital cost - a dish is a dish, and cable is cable. In fact my work will put up a twin LNB dish with 10m of cable for £99, so its not as if thats an especially expensive option. And £299 for a Sky HD box makes the Humax equivalent look OK value.
I think the bigger thing to consider is that Sky does tend to add on extra costs to do more things, such as recording, and of course this is on an ongoing basis.
I didn't know that the EPG will list all the channels, just to tempt you - very clever of them!
The best thing to do with all these things is to tot up how much each option costs in total, and which service gives you what you want.

jamie stevens: Multiswitch boxes do not operate on four different frequencies (or any in it comes to it) but over the entire intermediate frequency range of the LNB that its connected into, which in the case of Sky or Freesat is from 950 - 2150 Mhz.
Each of the outputs on a multiswitch box used for providing sat facilities in individual flats etc are internally connected into their own dedicated four position electronic switch that operates in exactly the same way as on a normal LNB, the only difference being that when a viewer is changing channels on a satellite box that's connected into such as a communal aerial systems multiswitch unit, the band / polarity control signals sent out from the sat box are not controlling the LNB but selecting which one of the four position switches dedicated inputs to latch onto, those being: Low band V - Low band H / High band V - High band H.
As far as your vertical / high band problem is concerned, is this problem occurring when your meter is connected into a quad block? or is it a Quattro type? because if the former and you have access to a scope then you should check that when your meter is set to measure the V / High output its supplying 12.5 - 14.5V DC as well as the 22Khz high band control signal.

I noticed that the new astra has a Middle East coverage. I am in Doha, Qatar. What size dish and what degree do I need to face the dish to watch all uk channels? I have my sky box with me with full UK subscription.

2:59 PM
Stamatina, the UK national broadcasters (and some english language commercial channels) within Sky and Freesat use Astra2's UK spotbeam which restricts reception, largely, to the United Kingdom and just a limited overspill to North West Europe, other english channels subscription and non-subscription use a Pan European Wide Beam which covers a good part of western central northern and eastern europe but unfortunately doesn't get much further than the far northwestern quadrant of Greece. Some of the Astra satellites at 19.2degE NOT 28.2degE DO cover the Middle East. There is a West African spotbeam on Astra2 but this DOES NOT unfortunately cover the Middle East.

m.mokhtary, you CANNOT receive ANY of the Astra 2 satellites over the middle east. Astra 2E/2F/2G are designed purely for viewers in the United Kingdom and Ireland ONLY;all UK national broadcasters use the UK only spotbeam which covers the whole of the United Kingdom with only a very limited overspill to North Western Europe, several free-to-air commercial broadcasters on those satellites where programme rights issues are not a concern (and some exclusively UK only subscription services in the BSkyB digital bouquets as well) use the pan-european widebeams which cover not only the United Kingdom but also a good part of mainland Europe as well. It is extremely unlikely that you will EVER receive Astra 2E/2F/2G over the middle east;the satellite footprints are so tight several european countries to the south and east of Europe have lost a lot of UK television channels from the UK spotbeams, but have managed to receive at least some from the pan-european beams-the main limit of the pan-european footpirnts is NW Greece which isn't ideal.

Accrington
Peter, you CAN receive Freesat in Switzerland and France but the signal strengths DO vary to receive the Astra 2 UK Spotbeam channels-for touring purposes with a caravan you'll need a 90cm dish antennae at the very least and a 100cm dish antennae at the very most-this is because the UK Spotbeam has a very tight footprint that only really spreads through France and ends further north of the mediterranean than the old Astra 2D did, also bear in mind, that signal strengths on the Astra 2 UK Spotbeam channels can vary widely across Europe from as short as a few miles between towns villages provinces and cities to as far away as several thousands of miles across the continent. As a result several locations in Southern and Eastern Europe have lost their access to UK TV channels on the Astra 2 UK Spotbeams-such is the tightness of the beam and the restricted spread.

Davy:If the box referred to is genuinely a Freesat device and "not" a free to air satellite box such as sold by Aldi or Lidls etc, then you do not have to enter any info relating to the name of a satellite
or transponders on, as the box is pre-programmed with the necessary info already in it.
What model of box are you using? and is the dish its connected into ex Sky, or have you just had the dish installed?, also, if the box offers options of either Satellite or Freesat, make sure that Freesat has been chosen and "not" satellite.

Some transponder moves have already occurred as indicated in the NITs of the two DVB networks at 28.2E.

Satellite Transponder Changes
All transponders in the 12500-12750 MHz Band have now been deactivated, bar, for unknown reasons, 12544.75 H on the ASTRA (BSkyB) platform.
For non-platform receivers, a Network scan may be advisable on 11778V for ASTRA, 11427H for Freesat. This will cause the device to write the new transponder list automatically.
Details of the changes follow.
Format:
Old Transponder --> New Transponder
