Do I need to get an aerial or can I connect my old sky dish straight to an aeri
Unlike with analogue or Freeview which use ground-based transmitters, satellite systems require a unique connection from each digibox to the satellite dish. If you want more than one digibox (or have a personal video recorder like Sky+ that requires two connection) you will have to upgrade the LNB on the dish to a multiple-output variety (a "quad LNB" as they are known) and have a satellite grade cable run in for each digibox.

Hi,
I have moved into a new place. I had Sky for 2 years. But at the new place, my landlord isn't allowing me to put a dish. What are my other options? could I switch to virgin media in order to get sky sports? what is requirement for virgin to work? I currently have the normal free channels that come through the normal aerial cable. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

James Goldburn: That "F" connector although being identical to a Sky or Freesat connection is dedicated for use only with a Virgin box and is of no use for anything other than that, which as you have already mentioned would involve a subscription fee.
As no post code (or one from nearby) has been given its not possible to access the Freeview reception predictor for purposes of assessing the signal strength in your area, as depending on your location there "might" be a chance of you being able to use a set top aerial, although under normal circumstances this is not really recommended as movement within the living area can still cause signal glitching problems, other than that then a loft or normal outside aerial (not necessarily roof mounted) is the only options you have left.

tom: If you already have a TV with Freeview, then you would only require a box "if" the TV was one of the brand models that cannot operate with the latest signal standards that came into force when the transmitters switched to high powered operation.
Further advice can only be given if a location (post code or one from nearby) is provided, plus info on the model number of the TV involved.

Hi...asking on behalf of my elderly father. He has a roof aerial with a lead that comes directly into the house...not via a socket/box but just the lead coming through the wall (the old way lol). He wants to run another aerial for an upstairs bedroom, and it would not be easy to use a splitter and run wiring all the way through the house to where he wants it. He is wondering if you can run a second cable directly from the rooftop aerial?
I can't imagine why not, but I know nothing lol.
Many thanks for any advice.

pat : The satellite dish is only suitable for reception of satellite signals. Connecting a Sky box (without a subscription), a Freesat box or a generic satellite receiver, as sold by a number of supermarkets, will offer reception of the free-to-air satellite channels. If you wish to receive Freeview channels you will need a UHF TV aerial connected to your Freeview box or TV as the frequencies used for these transmissions are different to those used by the satellites which are receivable on a Sky dish.
