Peter Winfield:
A TV that can connect to the internet would have to be equipped with an Ethernet connector on the back, or have a WiFi capability, and be linked through your broadband connection. Few, if any, 'set top boxes' have the ability to use the internet either.
The Alba STB300HD has an Ethernet connection - but it's not equipped to connect to the internet! (It seems to be for use in the factory to load the firmware program.)
Your need a modern 'smart' TV for internet connection, but the features are quite limited and it's nothing like using a computer on the internet. TVs sold in the last year or so may be equipped, but not all.

ryan: pretty much all the smart tv functions are also to be found on this years blu ray players - a basic one from samsung is £59.95 in the high street. You can also stream from tablets using Apple TV for iPads and ruku for android.
Be aware that watching 'live' tv on your device seems to frowned on, since that's what your paying your licence fee for. It might have changed, but certainly the main means to watch online via streaming is catchup.

I have bought a netgear WiFi adapter and connected to my Digital Stream freeview+ box, network light is green, showing connection, but now what to I do? How do I access any online services? I want to use my Netflix account, BBC iPlayer etc, but can't figure out how to get to them. :-(

Julie G: I had a quick look on the Digital Stream website Digital Stream , and there didn't seem to be any mention of it being smart at all. Yes, there is an ethernet port, and a description from the Amazon website that it means 'so you can connect to the Internet' but no sign that it will go online (unlike a Humax). We stopped selling that model at least a year ago, decent reviews, but no user friendly. Try a google search , but I think it wont do it.
If you want Netflix via your TV, a cheap blu-ray player will allow to do that - the Sony 3100 Buy Sony BDP-S3100 Smart Blu-ray Disc/DVD Player online at John Lewis has wifi built in (so no need for the netgear adapter) for less than £80. A samsung 2D non wifi one (but you can use the netgear in theory) is around for less than £50.
Alternatives are Apple TV (best if you've got an Ipad) or Roku (if your Android) - both will have Netflix in them anyway. UK - What is Roku | Roku Streaming Player - just buy one. - £50 for Roku, or Chromecast for less.
