I can see a transmitter but the power is low so I may not be able to pick it up Freeview and an upgraded aerial and digibox seems expensive.

The strength of the analogue signal is no guide to the Freeview signal. If you can get it, you will need a wideband aerial to be able to watch the BBC, ITV and C4 channels.

If you get a digibox and attach it to your existing roof top aerial and get most of the channels, you can then upgrade your aerial to wideband to get the rest.
