I have Sky+, what happens when I cancel my contract?
If you cancel your contract with Sky the Sky+ box will revert to the function of a normal Freesat from Sky (fSfS) satellite receiver - no PVR facilities and only a single tuner.
The different channels you get on Freesat/fSfS and Freeview can be seen here:

Please don't use a loft aerial, they don't work with Freeview. You need a rooftop aerial for reliable reception.

I'm thinking of cancelling my sky subscription and have read the above comments about it still being a freesat box once I stop paying. Will I need an outdoor ariel to use it this way or does it still come through the satellite dish?
Thanks x

sarah: It still comes through the satellite dish. There are some channels available on Freeview - TV through an aerial - that are not available on Sky's free service or the Freesat-branded service, and vice versa. There are a couple of channels available on Sky's free service that aren't on the Freesat-branded service, and again vice versa.
See the 'Compare TV' section at Compare Freeview and Freesat-from-Sky TV | ukfree.tv - independent free digital TV advice to figure out what's available on what system.
If you do cancel your Sky subscription, you would lose the recording and time-shifting capabilities of the Sky+ box, if you have one. You either have to keep paying at least £10/month (reportedly - if you ask Sky just to keep the recording features), or replace the box with a Freesat-branded recorder.

I'm hoping someone can advise me here..
I have a old Digi Sky multi room box, and I looking to cancel the subscription to Sky..what channels would I receive if I did this?
Also, Im buying a new HD TV, but I'm not interested in paying the extra £10 odd to Sky to receive the HD channels...I see no difference in the HD channels to be honest and don't want them......but do I have to still pay for HD even though I don't want it??? Hope this makes sense and someone can help... Thanks!

Zoe: See Compare TV | ukfree.tv - independent free digital TV advice for a comparison of the channels available on Sky's free service and the Freesat-branded service.
To watch HD channels you need an HD receiver as well as an HD TV. BBC One, BBC HD, ITV1 HD and 4hd are free-to-air on Sky and Freesat. Channel 5 HD is still encrypted but the free/expired viewing card is sufficient. Sky's HD fee is for viewing the subscription channels in HD.
If you don't already have an HD receiver it may be cheaper to get a Freesat box than to pay Sky for an upgrade (you have to sign up for 12 months HD pack to get the free box, or the standalone free offer is £175).
If you're not that bothered about HD you can still connect your existing Sky box to the new TV, assuming it still has some SCART inputs. Manufacturers have started reducing the number of SCART connections as they take up a lot of space compared to the HDMI connectors, you may find that new models only have one SCART input.

I intend to cancel Sky in the near future, the recent price rise was the last straw. I have a very old box (!2 years) will sky take it back and remove the dish, or can I use them for Freesat.

Alan Jordan: If anyone cancels their contract past the 12 months minimum period then all Sky will do is to simply cancel the access code on your card (this done over air) that enables you to view their Sky dedicated channels and nothing else, and so you will still be able to view all "free to view" channels.
You can test what you will be able to view by simply removing your card and going through the channels, pressing back up should any message appear on the screen.
By the way you retain the card plus the equipment unless you have signed anything to the contrary, but Sky is not really interested in recovering older boxes of the standard type.

Ray Bone: Please read the previous response by JB38 to Alan Jordan this matches what you are asking in yours. The"Freeview" digital terrestrial service is not connected to Satellite transmissions and so doesn't matter if you have a Freeview tuner in your TV or not.
