Using a HUMAX satellite receiver to watch Italian TV, mainly RAI channels but they often have the message that the channels is scrambled, but all I read is that RAI is free to view?

I understand that the channels are scambelled or withdrawn from satellite because of copyright reasons.

Thanks for the reply, would you happen to know what method they us to scramble the signal? Because when I was in Italy I couldn't get a straight answer. They must be able to watch the channels in Italy so I asked and all they would say is that you need SKY! Which I am sure is not correct.

It is probably what is called 'soft scrambling' where a rights holder (in defiance of European Law) demands that a programme not be broadcast outside the territory, so a SkyItalia subscription card is required to watch, even if no subscription is payable.

Listing for RAI channels can be found RAI TV listings.

Hi, thanks for that. If I was to arrange a card to be sent to a relative in Italy & then fwd onto me would that work ? Assuming I changed my box to one with a slot to accept a Tivu card. Would you know if its a one off cost or a suscription and are there any other technical implications ? My dad is still gutted he missed the Italy game friday !

Found the answers with a bit of internet digging. Basically UK italians can purchase a Tivu set box & card for the rip off price of about £200+ to get all the free to air channels without interruptions. What a money spinner for the satellite companies.

RAI - Gino, research the UK options carefully before proceeding. If you can buy a Tivu box
in Italy and register it to an address there, you will be safer longterm.

The problems with the RAI 1, 2 & 3 channels were caused when the RAI HD service was launched in the last week of May and was allotted the space previously used on Hotbird 9. If you were using a STB that did not receive HD signals, you would simply have seen the signal scrambled message. As described by others, the channles can be found on the alternative co-ordinates on the Hotbird 6 satellite.

In relation to TivuSat, you can obtain a card for 15 with an Italian codice fiscale. Provided your STB will decode Nagravision, you will not need anything else to see scrambled broadcasts on any of the RAI Channels - e.g. RAI 4, 5, Premium, Movies etc. You will also receive IRIS and Boing from Mediaset. If your STB does not decode Nagravision, you will need to buy a CAM - Conditional Access Module - to use with the card. These cost about 50 in Italy. Phillips 2 is a reliable one to choose.

RAI - Thanks "Dranreb69"; that is the fuller information. The codice fiscale requirement is the reason why caution with UK dealers is advised.

Hi guys, same problem as the rest of you. In the past all the channels I wanted for my Italian family I could find using an auto search feature on my Samsung dsr 9500 sat receiver. Even when channels got scrambled I'd re-scan at it would bring me up a refreshed list of channels. Now, however due to the raihd switched I can no longer get rai 1,2 or 3. The manual scan mode only allows me to scan hotbird 1to5 and nothing is coming up on those anymore help please!

RAI - Rocco, some is still free-to-air; RAI 1,2,3,N on 10.992V, as posted above. You may need to scan individual transponders manually (using the "all channels" option to include scrambled channels). RAI Gulp, Sport1+2, Storia are on 11.804V; RAI Scuola on 11.768V; RETE4 and Canal5 on 11.919V. From time to time channels are moved about, so check lyngsat.com or kingofsat.net for latest data if needed.

omg - thank you everyone for your advice about the loss of Rai 1 , 2 3 . Have just retuned to 10992 v 27500 2/3 and found them at the end of the channel search. And our receiver is an old Nokia.
( Now if I could just scramble grande fratello that my wife watches all night it seems on the next series that would be a prize !!).
