Ferom Jan 1st next year SKY will be obliged to pay vat collected from ROI suscribers to Irish Revenue.This is in response to a new EU directive that vat must be paid where a ompany has a presence in billing area.Vat is 23% in ROI .Sky will probably absorb the increase to remain competitive with UPC cable and Eircom.

UTV hastened its own demise by embarking on a disasterous entry into the Republic as UTV Ireland.It racked up losses of in excess of 1M a month throughout 2015.Programme content consisted of reruns of itv programmes from years back.UTV was removed from Virgin Media channel line up and this new channel was added with promises of ""unmissable entertainment".Advertisers steered well clear of it.A radio station in Britain had to be sold to stem the flow of money from the company.The two soaps Emmerdale and The Steet were only content that attracted advertisers.Subscriptions to Virgin Media cable were cancelled as a protest.UTV Ni aearned 10 M in advertising from Republic but a foolish ill advised business venture killed off this source of revenue.
